Browns NFL Draft Recap 2024

Last Updated: Feb 20, 2024

It was an odd season for the Cleveland Browns.

On one hand, the resurgence of Joe Flacco secured the Browns the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs. On the other hand, where does that leave the team with Deshaun Watson?

Watson wasn’t bad; however, he only played in six games. The Browns are stuck because they’re going to have to re-sign Flacco to ensure they have insurance should Watson’s injury woes continue.

That leaves open the likelihood the offseason will be dominated with QB controversy talk, on top of the baggage that Watson already carries with him.

Oh, right, and there’s the entire rest of the team to worry about. For example, Nick Chubb coming back from injury and possibly being a cap casualty as he only carries a $4M cap hit and would provide nearly $12M in cap savings should he be released.

It’ll be a busy offseason in Cleveland, that’s for sure.

Browns Draft Team Needs 2024

Note: The following information was written prior to the 2024 NFL Draft.

1. Edge

Myles Garrett, as he should, anchors this team’s pass rush and led Cleveland with 14 sacks. The issue is that the next best pass rusher, Za’Darius Smith, only generated 5.5 sacks and had a miserable 20.8% missed tackle rate.

Smith is decent and aging, as he’ll be 32 next year. Alex Wright has big-time potential and Ogbo Okoronkwo has never been a starter.

Using a second round pick on the pass rush makes sense in today’s NFL although Cleveland may evaluate their depth players differently.

2. Linebacker

Anthony Walker Jr. , Sione Takitaki, and Jacob Phillips are all on expiring deals and headed to free agency. The entire linebacker group is replacement-level besides Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

I’d love an inside linebacker taken in the third round. It’d be perfect if Michigan’s Junior Colson or North Carolina’s Cedric Gray were available at the Browns’ 85th overall pick in Round 3.

3. Defensive Tackle

The Browns led the league in rushing plays of 20+ yards allowed (18). While a lot of that is on poor linebacker play, it all starts at the point of attack.

Dalvin Tomlinson is one of the best to ever do it, but he is about two years past his prime. Shelby Harris had a solid 2023 season, but he’ll be 33 years old and a UFA this offseason.

More Position Needs: Wide receiver, Interior offensive line, Safety, Running back
Offseason re-sign priorities: WR Amari Cooper, OT Jedrick Wills, DE Za’Darius Smith
