Kalshi Age Requirement 2026: What Age Do You Have to Be to Use Kalshi?

ByFrank Ammirante

The Kalshi age requirement is 18, not 21, and that surprises a lot of people who come in expecting the same rules as a traditional sportsbook. It’s a lower bar, but there’s more to it than just your age.

I signed up for Kalshi myself and went through the full verification process, so I can walk you through exactly how the age limit works, what ID you’ll need, and the other eligibility boxes you have to check before your account goes live. Stick with me to find out everything you need to know.

What Is Kalshi?

Kalshi is a prediction market site where you trade on the outcome of real-world events, Kalshi event contracts, rather than placing traditional bets. These can be things like whether inflation will hit a certain number, whether a flight will be delayed, or whether it’ll snow on Christmas in New York. Each contract is priced between $0 and $1, and you’re essentially saying “yes this will happen" or “no it won’t" and trading accordingly.

The reason Kalshi can operate legally in the U.S. is because the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) approved it as a Designated Contract Market back in 2020. That’s the same type of designation that major futures exchanges hold, which means Kalshi sits firmly in the regulated financial space rather than in the grey area that a lot of other prediction sites sit.

What Kalshi’s Age Requirement Looks Like

The age question has a straightforward answer, but the full picture has a few more layers worth understanding before you go ahead and sign up.

The Minimum Age Is 18 Years Old

Kalshi’s signup page and help center both state that you need to be 18 years or older to open an account. This is a pretty big difference from most U.S. sportsbooks, which typically set the bar at 21+. Because Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated prediction market and not a state-licensed sportsbook, that regulatory distinction is why the age threshold for Kalshi sports predictions sits lower.

The Caveat

Kalshi’s member agreement says you need to be “of the age of majority in your state of residence," which in most U.S. states is 18. But in Alabama and Nebraska it’s 19, and in Mississippi it’s 21, so depending on where you live there could be a slightly higher bar than the standard 18+ you see on the signup page. For the vast majority of states though, 18 is all you need.

What This Means If You’re Between 18 and 20

This is where Kalshi’s age requirement becomes a real advantage if you’re looking into Kalshi election predictions. If you’re 18, 19, or 20 and you’ve been locked out of every sportsbook because of the 21+ floor, Kalshi is one of the few federally regulated options you can sign up for right now. The markets cover everything from economics and politics to weather and pop culture, so there’s plenty to get involved with even if sports was your original reason for looking into prediction markets.

Why Kalshi Asks for ID and Personal Details

The verification process is more thorough than what you’d find on a casual sign-up form, and there are good reasons for that.

What Kalshi Collects During Signup

When I went through registration, Kalshi asked for the usual stuff like name, email, and phone number, but also required my address, date of birth, and either a full or partial Social Security number. That level of detail makes sense when you consider that Kalshi is operating under federal financial regulations. Kalshi states that it collects this information to comply with U.S. laws and CFTC rules, and it’s simply a legal requirement that comes with being a designated contract market.

The Document Verification Step

Beyond the initial signup fields, Kalshi may also request document verification using a driver’s license or a passport. The details on your ID must match the information on your Kalshi profile exactly, so if there’s a mismatch between your ID name and the name you entered during registration, that’s going to create problems. I’d recommend double-checking that your legal name, date of birth, and address all line up before you submit.

Address Restrictions You Might Not Expect

Kalshi also won’t accept commercial addresses or PO boxes during the verification process. You need a residential address, so if you’re a college student using your university’s mailing address or someone who relies on a PO box, you’ll need to provide a qualifying home address instead.

How to Sign up Once You Meet the Age Requirement

The signup process took me about ten minutes from start to finish, and most of that was waiting for my ID to verify.

  1. Click one of the Kalshi banners on this page to head straight to the signup form.
  2. Enter your basic details including your name, email address, phone number, and date of birth.
  3. Provide your residential address (remember, PO boxes and commercial addresses won’t work here).
  4. Enter your Social Security number, either in full or the last four digits depending on what Kalshi requests.
  5. Upload a photo of your driver’s license or passport, making sure the name and date of birth match exactly what you entered in the previous steps.
  6. Wait for Kalshi to verify your documents, which in my case only took a few minutes.
  7. Fund your account and start trading on event contracts. Don’t forget about the Kalshi trading fees.

What You Can Trade on Once You’re Signed Up

Kalshi runs thousands of active markets across a wide range of categories, and the variety is one of the things that makes the site stand out once you’ve cleared the age and verification requirements.

Sports

Sports is the biggest section by trading volume, covering football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer, golf, and esports titles like Valorant and Counter-Strike 2. You’ll find game outcomes, spreads, totals, and player props, all in Kalshi’s yes/no contract format.

Politics and Economics

The politics section lets you trade on elections, approval ratings, and policy decisions, while economics markets cover Fed rate decisions, CPI releases, inflation, and unemployment data. These economics contracts react in real time as data drops, which makes them some of the most fast-moving markets on the site.

Crypto, Culture, and Climate

There’s also a crypto section with price prediction contracts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, a culture section where you can trade on the Oscars, Grammys, and box office performance, and climate markets tracking hurricanes, snowfall, and daily temperatures.

Pros and Cons of Kalshi Age Requirement

Pros

  • Minimum is 18 in most states
  • ID verification
  • CFTC-regulated

Cons

  • Can change depending on age of majority

You Only Need to Be 18+, but Bring Your ID

If the main thing you came here to find out is the Kalshi age requirement, the answer is 18 years old. That’s the minimum, and it’s an advantage over sportsbooks if you’re in that 18 to 20 range where most other sites won’t let you through the door.

Get your driver’s license or passport ready, make sure your residential address is current, and click the Kalshi banners on this page to get your account set up today.

Kalshi Age Requirement FAQ

How old do you have to be to meet the Kalshi age requirement?
You need to be at least 18 years old to sign up for Kalshi. The member agreement also states you must be of the age of majority in your state of residence, which is 18 in most U.S. states.
Is the Kalshi age requirement 18 or 21?
It's 18+. Kalshi's own FAQ directly compares its 18+ minimum against the typical 21+ required by sportsbooks. The lower threshold exists because Kalshi is regulated by the CFTC, not by state gaming commissions.
Does Kalshi require ID to verify the Kalshi age requirement?
Yes, Kalshi may request document verification using a driver's license or passport. The details on your ID need to match the information on your Kalshi profile exactly, so make sure everything lines up before submitting.
Does your address affect eligibility beyond the Kalshi age requirement?
Yes. Kalshi requires a valid residential address and won't accept PO boxes or commercial addresses during verification. If you're using a temporary or university mailing address, you'll need to provide a qualifying home address to complete the process.
Does meeting the Kalshi age requirement mean I'll be approved?
Not automatically. Beyond being 18+, you also need to pass identity verification, provide a valid residential address, and have lawful access from your jurisdiction. Age is the first hurdle, but there are several other boxes to check.
