The Colorado Avalanche were less than a minute away from eliminating the St. Louis Blues until the latter wouldn’t go away.
Nathan MacKinnon had the goal of the playoffs with less than three minutes left as he gave the Avs the lead with a hat trick, but it ended up not even mattering.
The Blues pulled Ville Husso and scored on the 6-on-5 with 56 seconds left to send the game to overtime before Tyler Bozak sent all the Avalanche fans home upset.
It looked like the fans were going to party for the first time since 2002, but the Avs will now have to go back to St. Louis Friday to play in a pivotal Game 6.

Avalanche vs Blues Game 6 Prediction
It looked like it was over Wednesday night when the Blues were down 3-0 during the second period. They were also down 3-1 heading into the third and then 4-3 with less than three minutes left.
Husso wasn’t having a good game, but Darcy Kuemper had an even more off game for the Avs. He gave up a couple of questionable goals which allowed the Blues to steal this one and send it back to St. Louis.
Heck, the Avs even wasted a MacKinnon legacy game. That’s a game that they just can’t drop, no matter what.

Now the Blues have some life heading back home and the Enterprise Center is going to be rocking.
I still think this is the Avs’ series to lose and that they’re going to come out fired up to win this one after what happened Wednesday. I haven’t seen enough from Husso where I think he can beat this Colorado team two more times.
Colorado is also unlikely to stop playing for the second game in a row once it gets a lead
I think Avs fans will be able to party it up on Friday night, as I like for them to advance to their first Western Conference Final in 20 years.

The Avalanche have scored at least four goals in the last three games of the series due to Husso’s poor play so I like for their offense to keep it going. It’s going to be up to their defense to shut down the Blues if they get a lead.
MacKinnon wants no part in being a second-round exit again, especially after he had a hat trick Wednesday night. I think he’s going to have a big game in this one, too.
Nazem Kadri has also been outstanding in this series and it would be poetic justice for him to score in that game (plus help the Avs close the series out) after the racist attacks he got following his accidental collision with Jordan Binnington.
Kuemper should be able to bounce back in goal since he was having a strong series prior to Game 5. I picked the Avs when this series started, and I’m not wavering from them now.
I think they find a way to bounce back and close this one out.

The Over has hit in three straight games in this series, and I like for it to continue in this one. A trend is usually your friend, as the saying goes.
Colorado’s offense woke up after scoring only one goal in Game 2 and they have scored 15 goals in their last three games.
I don’t trust St. Louis to slow Colorado down, but I also think St. Louis will be able to score at least a decent amount in this game for the Over to hit.

I really like this bet, especially with how the prior two games in St. Louis went.

They’ve been great at bouncing back from losses all year long.

The Avs outscored the Blues by a combined score of 11-5 in St. Louis as the Blues couldn’t keep up with the Avs’ scoring. They now face elimination in a series that many expected them to lose.

After Binnington went down with an injury in Game 3, Ville Husso came back into the net and struggled again. Those struggles continued in Game 4 as he gave up five goals in the 6-3 loss.
Now, the Blues’ season hangs by a thread as they have to go back to Denver to play the Avs and stave off elimination.
St. Louis tried to play a bit of a different game on Monday and it didn’t work out. Some of the Blues’ players (mainly David Perron) tried going after Kadri after he accidentally knocked Binnington out of the series and he ended up scoring a hat trick.
As the saying goes, the best way to beat an opponent that’s trying to do dumb stuff is to win the game.
I don’t like the Blues’ chances in this game, especially with how Husso has played in net during the playoffs. He’s played in five games but has allowed 18 goals and has given up almost five goals above expected. He also has a .884 save percentage in those games.
In the end, I like for the Avs to take this one as their high-end talent will be too much for the Blues to handle. I picked Avs in 5 at the beginning and I am sticking by it.

The Blues are going to give their best effort since their backs are up against the wall, but I don’t think that they’re going to send this series back to St. Louis.
Kadri has been a man on a mission these last two games, plus Mikko Rantanen also found his way onto the goal sheet for the first time on Monday.
I also haven’t liked the matchup against goaltender Darcy Kuemper all series. Kuemper has been locked in all year long and is one of the main differences between this year’s Avalanche and last year’s team. So far in these playoffs, Kuemper has a .917 save percentage and only a 2.14 goals-against average.
His hot streak will continue in this contest as the Avs will advance to their first Western Conference Final since 2002.

Lightning struck twice with the Over hitting on Monday’s game, and I like for it to strike three times here.
The Avs’ high-powered offense awoke in Game 3 after a couple of games off and it hasn’t gone away. They’ve scored 11 goals in their last two games while the Blues haven’t come close to slowing them down.
I like for the Avs to play strong defensively, but I still think the Blues will score a couple of goals to make sure this Over hits.

I’m going all out for this one as it could be the last game of the series. Kadri is on fire right now, and I think he’s going to see to it personally that the Blues get eliminated on Wednesday night.

I again like for the Avs to win comfortably and for the Over to hit since the Avs’ offense has definitely woken up as this series has gone on.

After splitting the first two games in Denver, the Avs traveled to St. Louis and took down the Blues, 5-2. It was a much better performance after they dropped Game 2 pretty easily.
Nazem Kadri and Gabriel Landeskog had goals, plus Colorado also got some depth scoring from Logan O’Connor and Artturi Lehkonen.
The Avs will now look to take a 3-1 stranglehold on the Blues as the latter will be without star goaltender Jordan Binnington for the rest of the round.

The Blues lost Binnington for the series after they announced that he suffered a knee injury on Saturday night. Kadri ran into him as he was trying to get to a loose puck and Binnington was obviously shaken up by it.
There were fans that thought this was dirty just because it was Kadri, but he really wasn’t doing anything wrong here. He was trying to win a loose puck battle to score and Binnington, unfortunately, got hurt on a bang-bang play.
This means that Ville Husso will get the net back but he’s struggled in the playoffs thus far. Husso has played in four games and has given up two goals above expected off a .891 save percentage.
That’s not good enough for a goalie who took the starter’s job and ran with it during the regular season. He has to get back to that level if the Blues have any chance of winning this series.
Based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m not sure he’ll be able to rediscover that form. I like the Avs to take this one and get to being one win away from a berth in the Western Conference Finals.

The Blues are going to want to do this for Binnington but again, I just don’t think they’re going to get good enough goaltending to win this series.
He was the main reason the Blues were in all three games before he got hurt. After he left the game, the Avalanche took advantage and blitzed Husso and the game was then out of reach.
Colorado has too much firepower for St. Louis to deal with - especially when the latter is banged up defensively.

I know the Over hit last game, but I don’t think lightning will strike twice with this one.
I like for the Avs to play a solid defensive game and limit the number of quality chances that Darcy Kuemper will face. In turn, I like for Colorado to score a good amount of goals, but it won’t be to the point where the Over hits.
Husso will also make enough saves to the point where the game doesn’t turn into a blowout.

I’m a bit surprised that +150 are the odds for the Avs to win by more than a goal, but I will gladly take them.

I have to say, I was not expecting that kind of performance from the Blues on Thursday night. They swarmed the Avalanche all game long and made things difficult for Colorado in the offensive zone.
The Blues’s suffocating defensive game frustrated Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar, who gathered his team together during the late stages of the first period and had some choice words for them.
Whatever he said didn’t work as the Blues scored four goals and goaltender Jordan Binnington was lights out in net once again.
I expect Game 3 to be tight, but I like the Avalanche to respond. When Colorado faced adversity during the regular season, they generally got back on track in the next game and I expect that to happen here.

It’s going to be close, but I like the Avs to pull out this win and regain the lead in the series.
Yes, St. Louis is going to be buzzing, but there are some players on the Avs who haven’t made their mark on this series yet. I’m still waiting for Cale Makar to have his moment and the same goes for Nathan MacKinnon.
Through the first two games, those two have combined for two points (both are MacKinnon assists) and if the Avalanche are going to win this series, their best players need to step up.

Mikko Rantanen has also been a bit quiet in this series — and in the playoffs as a whole — as he’s yet to score a goal in six games after netting a career-high 36 during the regular season.
I expect one of those players, if not multiple, to find the back of the net in Game 3 to turn the series back in Colorado’s favor.

I thought Game 2 was going to be a high-scoring game, but both teams (especially the Blues) continued to play more defensive-minded hockey.

As long as he continues his stellar play, the Blues will have a shot in every game this series.

This bet hit in both games in Colorado and I think that trend will continue in St. Louis.
The Blues have looked like a team doesn’t want history to repeat itself after getting swept out of the postseason by the Avalanche last year. They added roster depth at both forward and defense heading into this season and that has paid massive dividends so far.
This is going to be another close affair. I like the Blues to cover, even though I don’t have them winning.

Again, I like the Avs to bounce back, especially after they looked lethargic for most of Game 2 at home. That was only their sixth regulation home loss of the season.
I also think it’s going to be another low-scoring game as the Blues are trying to turn this series into a defensive slugfest. Lastly, it may be 50/50, but I think the score will be an odd total at the end — as predicted in my 3-2 score pick.
Each of the first two games in this series had an odd number of goals, so that should be able to continue.

The Colorado Avalanche struck first in Game 1 with a 3-2 overtime victory against the St. Louis Blues. The game shouldn’t have even got to that point, but they were still able to win it.
Colorado outshot St. Louis 13-0 in overtime before Josh Manson finally beat goaltender Jordan Binnington. It was a heroic performance from the Blues’ netminder as he did everything he could to win this game.
The Avalanche are now 5-0 in the playoffs heading into Game 2 on Thursday.

The Avalanche dominated the Blues in Game 1 to the point that they almost had five expected goals. For the Blues, they didn’t even have two expected goals through 60-plus minutes of game action.
Colorado peppered Binnington all game long and the only reason that the game didn’t end in regulation was due to the Avs hitting five posts (plus Binnington playing God).
The Avs are the better team in this series, and I like for them to continue to show that in Game 2. They also only lost five games in regulation at home during the regular season, which is another big reason why I’m gonna roll with the Avs again here.

I think this game is going to be close, especially if Binnington is going to play well again.
I just don’t like how the Blues match up with the Avs’ top six. Colorado was torching St. Louis all game long on Tuesday, whether the Nathan MacKinnon line was on the ice, or it was the Nazem Kadri line.
The Kadri line had 93% of the scoring chances at 5v5, while the MacKinnon line had 71% of the scoring chances at evens. There’s only so much Ryan O’Reilly can do as the Blues’ top-line center.
Colorado should have a comfortable 2-0 lead heading back to St. Louis for Games 3 and 4.
Avalanche vs Blues Game 2 Best Bets

I’m mainly making this pick due to how good Binnington was on Tuesday night. He wasn’t good during the regular season (he even lost his job to Ville Husso) but has been able to turn the clock back to 2019 in the playoffs thus far.
He saved 51 of 54 shots in Game 1, which is good for a .944 save percentage. In the playoffs thus far, he’s saved four goals above expected and also has a .944 overall save percentage.
I like for him to keep the Blues in this one as much as he can, while they also get some scoring from their deep group of forwards.
OVER 6.5 Goals (-120)

I got the under right in Game 1, but I feel like we’re going to see more offense in this game. A team can only slow down the Avalanche for so long before they breakout.
Think about it: If the Avalanche didn’t hit five posts on Tuesday night, the Over likely hits.
Lightning won’t strike twice with that one. I like for there to be more offense in this one, especially from an Avalanche perspective.

Finally, I still like for the Blues to keep this close as the series will then shift to the Enterprise Center.

They also have the best quintet in hockey with Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, and Mikko Rantanen on the top line, plus an elite defensive pairing of Cale Makar and Devon Toews.
There’s nobody on the Blues that can stop that line. St. Louis will then have to try and find a way to shut down the Nazem Kadri line, which has also caused problems for teams all season long.
I’ll take the Avalanche in this one by a comfortable margin.

I may be wrong, but I really do not see this series going the distance. Yes, the Blues did a great job shutting down the Minnesota Wild, but this is a much different level of opposition.
The Avalanche come at you in waves and I don’t think the Blues can survive against that every game. St. Louis goaltender Jordan Binnington played well in the last round after taking over for Ville Husso, but he will need to find his 2019 Stanley Cup-winning form to keep his team in this series.

One game in Colorado’s opening round series against Nashville went to overtime and I expect that trend to continue in this series.
I’m not sure which team is going to win it, since it’s basically a coin flip when the game goes to an extra session, but there will be at least one game that goes beyond 60 minutes.
If I had to guess, I think it will be either Game 3 or Game 4 in St. Louis.
