Super Bowl LVII is taking place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023, at around 6:30 p.m. ET.
This is the fourth Super Bowl in the Phoenix metropolitan area, with the most recent being Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 between the Patriots and the Seahawks.
An important factor for wagering on the Super Bowl is how the weather will come into play. Many may write off Arizona’s warm weather as a non-factor, but the stadium setup and other attributes of the area might have their say in the playing conditions.
I’ll detail below how the weather at State Farm Stadium might impact Super Bowl 57 betting.
Super Bowl Weather Forecast 2023
State Farm Stadium is a retractable roof stadium.
Generally, early in the football season when the temperatures are too hot, the roof is closed. Later in the season, when the temperatures become more moderate, the roof is usually open.

There will be plenty of indoor and outdoor activities in the week leading up to the game, so let’s take a look at the weather all week long.
First off, the climate of the region is a desert.
On average, the area receives less than 10 inches of precipitation a year. (Phoenix averages slightly more than eight inches per year). So, it should be no surprise that no rain is expected to fall during Super Bowl week.
Afternoon high temperatures will be the coolest early in the week, with a warming trend leading up to the game.
Beneath mostly sunny skies every day of the week, high temperatures will range from approaching 70 on Monday to the mid-to-upper 70s on game day. The average high temperature for Phoenix during February is 71, so temperatures will be a handful of degrees above normal.
Morning low temperatures will be a bit chilly (in the low-to-mid-40s) all week long, so a sweater or light coat is recommended for any early-morning activities before the Arizona sunshine quickly warms things up.
With the overall quiet weather pattern in place, winds will be light all week with afternoon breezes around 10 mph.
How Weather Could Affect Super Bowl Betting
Extremes
Generally, one word of advice for how weather impacts NFL wagering: extremes. Look for weather conditions that will cause a difference in the game, something that the coaching staff/players know about and plan for.
This could be high winds (over 20 mph), frigid conditions (less than 30 degrees Fahrenheit), or precipitation (rain/snow/sleet). Obviously, by the description of the weather conditions above, there are no extremes to worry about for this game.

Field Conditions
State Farm Stadium is a technologically advanced venue. The playing field rests on 13 railroad-like tracks and uses 546 steel wheels to move the Tifway 419 (a dense Bermuda grass hybrid) surface 740 feet. This allows the surface to actually move outside the stadium to receive natural sunlight and irrigation.
Knowing this, one would think that the condition of the grass field would not be an issue. However, recent history suggests otherwise.
On Jan. 1, 2023, the Michigan Wolverines were defeated by the TCU Horned Frogs in the Fiesta Bowl. There were several plays where the hybrid grass surface was less than ideal.
Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy lost his footing during Michigan’s first drive. On another drive, Michigan wide receiver Cornelius Johnson slipped trying to make a cut, contributing to an incompletion on a third-down pass attempt.
On Sept. 3, 2022, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid blamed the field conditions at State Farm Stadium for injuries to kicker Harrison Butker and defensive back Trent McDuffie during a press conference after the Chiefs beat the Cardinals 44-21:
“It (the turf) was a little bit loose," Reid was quoted. “That’s what happens sometimes when you re-sod it. Listen, it was part of the Butker injury and the McDuffie injury, and that’s unfortunate. The turf picked up. I would tell you that did have something to do with it. If it didn’t, I’d tell you that, too. It’s not an excuse by any means. But you all can see it when you watch the tape."

Though past field problems can’t determine what the field will be like for the Super Bowl, it would not be surprising if there were a few issues here and there, especially where the sod is pieced together.
“The field started its growth pattern over a year ago for the Super Bowl,” Ed Mangan, NFL field director, recently told reporters. “The field is maintained seven days a week up until this point. We brought out our laser graders and laser level to make everything perfectly smooth.”
“The field is rolled into State Farm Stadium in sections that are 3 1/2 feet wide and 40 feet long, weighing in at approximately 1,500 pounds. We roll every piece out like a carpet, then make sure everything is smooth and put all the edges together.”
Another concern is that the field could be in worse shape after Rihanna’s halftime performance. “We work hand in hand with that team (the halftime show team) to ensure that everything works together, and we minimize the impact on the grass itself,” Eric Finkelstein, NFL senior director of events planning, said to the press.

Super Bowl Weather Betting Tips
Watch the plays early in the game. If you see an issue with the field causing problems with planting, making cuts, and changing directions, the live Under for the game total could be in play.
With Patrick Mahomes’ high-ankle sprain possibly still an issue, play calls could become a bit conservative for Kansas City if the coaching staff sees that footing is less than ideal.
On the other side of the field, if one of Jalen Hurts‘ designed runs goes awry early on because of a slip, that part of the offensive game plan might be minimized.
Same goes with plays right after halftime. If there are some obvious, visible issues with the field coming out the locker rooms, a lean towards the second-half live Under may be in order.
