We’re finally set for the puck to drop on the 2021-22 NHL season. It’s time for a full 82-game schedule with fans in the stands. It will be interesting to see how teams play with the divisions back to normal after last season’s realignment. Did some teams benefit by playing the same opponents all season long? We’ll see how it plays out.
Tonight we have two games on the slate, with the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the Seattle Kraken making their NHL debut against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Pittsburgh Penguins/Tampa Bay Lightning Under 6 Goals (-120)
The Tampa Bay Lightning have a high-flying offense with stars like Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos, and Victor Hedman, but six goals is a high bar for this game. The reason for this is the Pittsburgh Penguins are depleted tonight.
The Penguins will open their season without their two best players, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, as they are both dealing with injuries. That leaves Jeff Carter as the team’s top-line center. We can expect the Penguins to play a defensive game in this one, as they try to squeak out a point in a tough spot. The Under looks like the right play here.
Tampa Bay Lightning (-240)
The Lightning have won back-to-back Stanley Cups and it’s hard to see them slowing down any time soon. This team is stacked from top to bottom, with high-end forwards like the aforementioned Kucherov, Point, and Stamkos, a stud defenseman in Hedman, and a top-tier goalie in Andrei Vasilevskiy.
While the line is expensive tonight, it’s tough to see them losing against a Penguins team without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The Lightning have dominated at home in the last two seasons, going 43-17-2. Look for Tampa Bay to get their season started on the right foot.
Vegas Golden Knights (-260)
The Vegas Golden Knights come into this season as one of the Stanley Cup contenders. They play a team game, rolling four lines deep with a solid defense core and good goaltending. They have also been dominant at home, going 67-28-11 in the last three seasons.
The Knights are the first opponents of the Seattle Kraken. While the Kraken added solid players like center Yanni Gourde and goalie Phillip Grubauer, this team is still a work in progress. Gourde projects as their top-line center, but he’ll be out for this game.
The Kraken might also be missing forwards Jared McCann, Joonas Donskoi, Marcus Johansson, and Calle Järnkrok, along with defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, who are all in COVID protocol. This is a bad spot for Seattle.
Stay tuned for the betting record, as I’ll be keeping track of my plays all season long.
