Dynasty RB Fantasy Football Rankings: Breakdown

The most crucial position in dynasty football is running back, but it’s also the most difficult to navigate. Most teams are shying away from using a single workhorse back in favor of two, three or even four players who can specialize in certain things. It’s also a position that can quickly change, as a back’s “prime" years often only last through their initial rookie contract.

More so than any other position, age takes priority at the running back position in dynasty football. That is why we have Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts ranked near the top of the list with Christian McCaffrey and Dalvin Cook. During his rookie season (age 21), Taylor totaled nearly 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns. Behind one of the league’s best offensive lines, Taylor should continue to produce elite numbers for the foreseeable future.

McCaffrey and Cook both remain strong RB1 options at the top of the board despite both players entering the fifth year of their NFL careers. When healthy, these are two of the highest-scoring backs in fantasy football, but each player has dealt with their fair share of injuries. Don’t be afraid to draft or trade premium assets for either player, but don’t be surprised if the production takes a dip sooner rather than later.

Owners/league managers who typically have a lot of success in dynasty leagues can identify the next breakout running back. There are several worthy candidates this year, including two second-year backs in J.K. Dobbins and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Both impressed as rookies and are expected to see even more work within two elite offenses. One of these two players could undoubtedly find themselves ranked among the top five running backs in dynasty by this time next year.

The top incoming rookie is none other than Najee Harris, who the Pittsburgh Steelers selected at No. 24 in the 2021 NFL Draft. If you find yourself a little hesitant to draft Harris ahead of proven stars like Ezekiel Elliott or Aaron Jones, remember that youth is the name of the game. Harris should be a workhorse back from the get-go. Look for Harris to eclipse 300 touches as a rookie and immediately be among the top-12 scoring running backs in 2021.

So, where do you turn if you are searching for value at the running back position after the top-10 or -12 names? Can Tony Pollard eventually replace Elliott in Dallas as the lead back? What about Damien Harris in New England, who had a nice breakout season in 2020? Is A.J. Dillon‘s time in Green Bay ever going to come? These are just some of the decisions dynasty players have to ask themselves at the running back position.
