Vladimir Gutierrez went on a strong run from July 27- August 22, going 5-1 with a 1.86 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 36 strikeouts, and 10 walks over 38 2/3 innings across six starts. He also struck out at least six batters in four of those outings.
He got shelled in his most recent appearance, however, allowing five runs on seven hits in just three innings on the road against the Miami Marlins. It was surprising given that he had just dominated them in his previous start, striking out eight over seven innings of one-run ball.
I’m going to chalk up his last outing as a hiccup, especially since he gets the Detroit Tigers tonight who have been one of the worst teams in baseball against right-handed pitching in the last 30 days. They rank in the bottom three in BB%, K%, AVG, ISO, wOBA, and wRC+, making Gutierrez a good bet to bounce back at home.

Glenn Otto is coming off an impressive MLB debut on August 27 in which he fanned seven over five scoreless innings against the Houston Astros. The 25-year-old has been solid in the minors all year with a combined 3.20 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A along with a 1.01 WHIP, 134 strikeouts, and 24 walks in 95 2/3 innings.
My bet against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday paid off handsomely as Geritt Cole racked up 15 punchouts in seven innings. Much like the Tigers, the Angels rank in the bottom five in BB%, K%, AVG, ISO, wOBA, and wRC+ vs. right-handed pitchers in the last 30 days, making this a great spot for Otto to flourish.
