Week 27 Fantasy Baseball Closers: Depth Chart News, Saves Tips & Bullpen Report

Detroit Tigers

  • Closer: Michael Fulmer
  • Backups: Alex Lange, Kyle Funkhouser

With Gregory Soto out for the season, Michael Fulmer regains the role of closer in Detroit. Fulmer’s season started off strong, but tailed off toward the middle due to fatigue and injury.

Fulmer has not had the smoothest career thus far due to elbow injuries and high expectations from a stellar rookie season, but high-leverage relief may be his calling.

Over the past week, Fulmer has converted 3 saves, raising his season total to 11. Fulmer’s been fantastic this season relative to his career with sub-4.00 peripherals like xFIP/SIERA/xERA etc.

He should be rostered down this stretch given that Detroit is actually winning games.

Texas Rangers

  • Closer: Joe Barlow
  • Backups: Spencer Patton

The Texas Rangers are not exactly the team you want a closer from due to how horrendous their season has been, but Joe Barlow has been excellent in save situations. He now has 7 on the season with a 1.46 ERA.

While his peripherals are not extremely friendly due to his middling K% and high walk rate, Barlow’s been successful by limiting hard contact and forcing batters into outs.

His 58.3% medium contact rate is incredible, which is exemplified by a 3.8% HR rate — one of the lowest among closers. Barlow’s minor league career displays a tantalizing upside which makes him an appealing pick-up for the rest of this season, and potentially 2022 fantasy drafts.
