What Is Over/Under Betting on Unibet?

Over/Under betting is one of the most common options available for bettors both online and at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks.

Bettors are empowered to determine whether there will be over or under a certain number of points in a game, with corresponding odds depending on the likelihood of that number being correct.

The odds for most totals are usually -110, though they could range from -120 to +100 depending on what sport’s totals you’re betting.

For instance, if the Over/Under for an NFL game between the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions is 40.5, you can bet on there to be over (more) or under (fewer) than that number in the game.

If the game ends 20-19 then under hits. If the final score is 21-20 then the over is successful, regardless of which team wins.

How Do Unibet Totals Work?

Unibet totals are comparable to those at other online sportsbooks. The sportsbook assigns odds to a number that bettors believe a team will go over or under.

Unibet, a sportsbook based in Malta that is best known for its vast array of global betting markets, offers totals in every team sport, including soccer, hockey, and more.

However, game totals are just one type of Over/Under Unibet offers.

Unibet also gives bettors the opportunity bet on Over/Unders in futures markets like with single-season win totals, as well as draft positioning for individual players.

Plus, almost all player props — outside of the anytime goal/touchdown scorer and home-run hitter — are listed as an Over/Under.

Team props are also often Over/Unders too. For instance, if you’re wagering on a team to score over or under a certain number of points in a game that number will be listed as a total.

For example, if I am in Virginia, I could wager on the Washington Capitals to finish with over 101.5 regular-season points or bet on Alexander Ovechkin to produce over 5.5 shots on goal in a single game.

Or I could wager on the Capitals’ game against the Pittsburgh Penguins to finish with over or under 6.5 goals.

Or if hockey isn’t my thing, I could bet on the Washington Wizards to finish with over or under 38.5 regular-season wins or bet on them to score over or under 55.5 first-half points in a regular-season game.

Unibet Over/Under Rules

Unibet totals come with some ground rules, including:

  • Pushes: Rarely, a total will be listed as a whole number, since they are usually set at half-numbers to avoid pushes, but in the event a total finishes with the exact number listed the wager is a push and the bettor will receive his/her initial stake back.
  • Voids: Player props are live when the player suits up, but in the event that an injury or illness costs him/her from entering the game, that wager is voided and the bettor’s initial stake is returned. Full-season point/win totals can also be voided if the team featured does not play enough games.

Types of Unibet Totals

Traditionally totals are centered around the total number of points in a game. But there is a vast assortment of Over/Under wagers to make.

Almost all player props are technically Over/Unders, outside of the anytime goal/touchdown/home run wager, as bettors are invited to wager on whether a player will surpass a predetermined statistical total or not in a given game.

Futures bets can be Over/Unders, since sportsbooks invite bettors to wager on a team to win over or under a certain number of games in a season.

There are Over/Unders for draft wagering, particularly the NBA and NFL drafts, where bettors are asked to choose whether a player will be selected over or under a specific position.

Unibet NFL Totals

Unibet gives bettors a plethora of Over/Unders to wager, including props, futures — like an individual team to surpass a certain win total — and the traditional game totals like an individual’s point total in a single game or the full number of points in the whole game.

For instance, if you’re a Colts fan in Indiana, you could wager on Jonathan Taylor to surpass his individual game total for rushing or receiving yards or you can bet on the Colts to score more than 24.5 points or you can bet on there to be over 50.5 points in their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Or if you want to think broader you can wager on the Colts to win over 9.5 games.

If you’re not a Colts fan you could wager on the under in any of those wagers too.

Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is like Christmas for sports bettors, and Unibet offers a vast assortment of Over/Under bets to wager on.

There are your standard totals but also player props and game props, plus novelty Over/Under props like the length of the national anthem.

Over/Under Bet Strategies

The best strategy is to target market inefficiencies and be sure to do research too.

If a total looks too low, check and see why it might be where it is. If it still doesn’t make sense then mash it. If it seems high, mash the under.

You likely know your team better than the sportsbooks even do, so if you believe a number is too high or low given your favorite team’s recent output, it is worth it to take advantage of that knowledge.

Also, consult our research to determine whether our analysis either affirms or contradicts what your gut says.

Even offensively challenged or teams in a slump can snap out of it at any time. But a bad beat is better than suffering the embarrassment of wagering on a number and then realizing your logic was completely misguided.

Over/Under Betting for Beginners

Take a spin around the sportsbook. Learn what works and what doesn’t. Trial and error is your friend.

There’s a reason why online sportsbooks like Unibet like to give gamblers playable funds on their platform since knowledge gives bettors a better comfort level.

A comfortable bettor is more likely to wager on games, and that’s what sportsbooks want.

You’re going to make mistakes, and you’ll probably kick yourself over them. But you’ll also win big, especially if you do your homework and follow the trends.

Be responsible, learn from your mistakes and have fun. You’ll be a seasoned vet in no time.

How to Calculate Over/Under Odds?

Most Over/Under odds are -110, which means bettors win $100 profit on a $110 bet or $0.91 for every dollar wagered.

As stated above, these odds can fluctuate slightly, with boosts and market influences making them either shorter or longer depending on the sport, but if you see -110 as the odds that will be your payout.

Fortunately, Unibet, like other online sportsbooks inform bettors of the exact odds and payouts of their totals wager before users place their bets. So you’ll know exactly how much you’re going to win out front.

Why Are Over/Unders a Good Bet?

Because they are fun and still can hit if your idea of which team will win is off.

For instance, if I believed the New England Patriots would defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, I might’ve wagered on the over as one of my single bets in that game.

The Patriots may have lost 41-33, but I, as an over-bettor, still would’ve recouped some money.

In Super Bowl LV, I thought the Kansas City Chiefs would defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Even though that did not happen, I still successfully hit when Tom Brady finished under his passing-yards prop in that game.

Can Over/Unders Be a Bad Bet?

They can die quickly, for sure. If you want to bet an under, and each team scores at will in the first, your bet is in huge trouble and not last the entire game’s duration.

If you bet the over and there’s a scoreless first you could be in deep as well.

If you’re parlay betting a spread and an under that can also be a bad bet since wagering on a team to cover a certain number of points flies in the fact of rooting for fewer points to be scored. Sometimes they pan out. It’s just usually not smart betting.

What Sports Are Available for Over/Unders?

Every team sport where a game might have a certain number of points and goals.

  • Soccer: Totals are usually in the 2.5-3.5 range, unless you’re betting on them live.
  • Hockey: Totals usually range from 5.5-6.5. Baseball Over/Unders are usually around 8, unless the game is at Coors Field.
  • Football: Totals are from 38.5-50.5, unless it’s college.
  • Basketball: Totals can vary widely.

Point is, if you want to throw down on an Over/Under bet, you have a vast array of sports to choose from.

Is There Bet Insurance on Over/Unders?

Rarely. Unless your Over/Under bet is your initial second-chance bet or a parlay leg in a multi-leg wager that comes with parlay insurance, most total bets are exempt from bet insurance.
