EDITOR'S OPINION

PrizePicks is a user-friendly platform that strikes the perfect balance in its contest offerings to forge a product that should appeal to both beginner and seasoned real-money-sports-game players. Based on either a straightforward fantasy scoring system or real-world sports statistics that fans already obsess over, PrizePicks contests enhance the consumption and enjoyment of sporting events by investing participants in the individual accomplishments of the real-world athletes.

PrizePicks Hands-on Review

PrizePicks was founded in 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia and quickly made a splash in the real-money-based sports gaming market at a time when salary-cap-based contests offered by the likes of DraftKings, FanDuel, and a host of other small competitors were the dominant format in the market.

PrizePicks is the third product from parent company Performance Predictions and labels itself as the “largest independently owned DFS platform in North America.”

PrizePicks has already struck partnerships with the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, and Miami Marlins in terms of professional sports teams, with an eye on expanding that portfolio in the future.

What Is PrizePicks?

PrizePicks is a real-money sports gaming platform that is available through both a browser version and a state-of-the-art app from either the App Store or Google Play that boasts an average 4.8 user rating (out of 5) in the former as of August 2021.

In most states, you need to be only 18 years or older to join.

PrizePicks utilizes elements from other traditional forms of real-money sports games to offer contests based on the concepts of fantasy scoring or real-world statistical props. The operator offers contests on virtually every major individual and team sport, as well as eSports.

How Does PrizePicks Work?

As just mentioned, PrizePicks offers contests for a wide variety of sports in what are essentially two contest formats and two modes of gameplay.

Single-Stat DFS Contests

In these PrizePicks contests, users predict whether anywhere from 2-5 real-world athletes will finish under or over a pre-set statistical benchmark specific to their sport. For example, a user playing an NBA contest could utilize the metric of 20.5 Points + Assists as the statistical benchmark they want to make their Over/Under prediction on.

Fantasy Score

In these PrizePicks contests, users predict whether a real-world athlete will finish under or over a pre-set fantasy-point benchmark based on PrizePicks’ fantasy scoring system for that sport.

PrizePicks users can also play mixed-sports contests, where they create a contest ticket that includes Over/Under selections involving up to five athletes from multiple sports.

Additionally, users select which mode of gameplay they’d like to apply to their contest selection.

Presently, PrizePicks contests can be played under one of the following two modes:

Power Play

In Power Play mode, the user must get all their Over/Under picks correct to receive a payout. Payouts are an amount that is a multiplier of their entry fee, with that multiplier based on how many picks their contest entry consisted of:

  • 4 Picks Correct: Payout is 10x entry fee.
  • 3 Picks Correct: Payout is 5x entry fee.
  • 2 Picks Correct: Payout is 2x entry fee.

Flex Play

In Flex Play mode, the user is allowed to get one selection wrong on 3-to-5-pick entries and still receive a payout.

  • 5-Pick entry with 5 picks correct: Payout is 10x entry fee.
  • 5-Pick entry with 4 picks correct: Payout is 2x entry fee.
  • 5-Pick entry with 3 picks correct: Payout is 0.4x entry fee
  • 4-Pick entry with 4 picks correct: Payout is 4x entry fee.
  • 4-Pick entry with 3 picks correct: Payout is 1.5x entry fee.
  • 3-Pick entry with 3 picks correct: Payout is 3x entry fee.
  • 3-Pick entry with 2 picks correct: Payout is 1.25x entry fee.

PrizePicks Signup Bonus

PrizePicks has an appealing welcome bonus to receive a 100% instant deposit match of up to $100. For example, if you deposit $48, you will get $48 matched in promo funds.

PrizePicks No-Deposit Bonus

At present, PrizePicks does not offer a no-deposit bonus.

PrizePicks Deposit Bonus

Yes, PrizePicks’ current deposit bonus offer is the one just detailed in the Signup Bonus section above. Get a first-deposit bonus up to $100.

PrizePicks Second-Chance Bet

PrizePicks is a DFS site, not a sportsbook, so no second-chance bet offer would apply.

PrizePicks Promotions

In addition to the aforementioned Signup Bonus promotion, PrizePicks also offers a Referral Promotion where a user is rewarded $25 in promotional funds for every individual that signs up utilizing the user’s personal promotional code and makes a deposit of at least $10.

My PrizePicks App Experience

The PrizePicks app was easy to find and download from the App Store. Upon entering basic personal information required (detailed in the How To Join PrizePicks section), I was immediately able to review the PrizePicks lobby and making an initial deposit through an easy-to-locate green “Deposit” button in the upper right-hand corner.

The site’s menu of sports offerings was also easy to locate in the form of a series of horizontal, scrollable panes near the top of the screen.

The Contest Type tab of either Single Stat DFS or Fantasy Scoring is conveniently found directly underneath.

Following that section, there is another horizontal listing of sport-specific statistics that dynamically changes based on the user’s selection in the sports offerings section.

For example, a user who wishes to play an MLB contest in Single Stat DFS mode will be asked to choose which baseball-specific metric(s) they want their contest to be graded on (i.e., hits+walks, runs + RBI, total bases, etc.).

Another vertical dropdown menu is revealed by clicking on an icon of four vertically stacked lines in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. This menu enables the user to access the following links:

  • An Overview of current/past contest entries.
  • Invite Friends
  • PrizePicks Tutorial
  • Deposit Funds
  • PrizePicks Facebook Group
  • Live Support
  • Responsible Gaming
  • Terms
  • Request Withdrawal
  • Settings

Overall, I was pleased with my experience on both the PrizePicks app and the browser version of the site, with one exception.

On both – but more so on the browser version — I encountered freezing occasionally. On the browser version, this caused me to have to leave the site altogether and re-enter it, at which point I was required to sign in again.

The issue on the app wasn’t as prevalent, as it only manifested itself in the form of a slight lag on occasion when trying to toggle between the different sports tabs, for example.

Is PrizePicks Legit?

Yes, PrizePicks is a legitimate company that was founded in 2015 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia. PrizePicks abides by all rules and regulations governing daily fantasy sports and real-money-based sports games in every jurisdiction it operates in.

Should You Play at PrizePicks?

PrizePicks is a highly attractive option for those sports fans who long for the thrill of having some proverbial “skin in the game” without having to concern themselves with some of the more confounding aspects of salary-cap-based daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests.

PrizePicks offers contests for both those who are accustomed to traditional fantasy sports play and for the potential non-fantasy-sports-playing fan who’s simply more familiar with raw statistics.

In either case, the fact the contest participant is only competing against the operator makes it a much more straightforward game where factors like player rostering percentages, users with multiple lineups, and competing against thousands of others are taken out of the equation.

The site also offers contests with attractive prize pools and is easy for even novice users to pick up on and succeed in quickly, adding to its overall appeal.
