What Is Polymarket Exactly, and Where Is It Available?
A much-asked question that I’ll try to answer as succinctly as possible. In basic terms Polymarket is a specialist prediction market platform that offers a huge variety of event contracts. The categories available span crypto, climate, politics, economics, culture, and sports.
Polymarket is registered as a Designated Contract Market exchange. As such it’s regulated by the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) and operates in the US under their guidance. In the eyes of the CFTC, prediction markets are considered as ‘swaps’, which are a legitimate trading product, and therefore available to anyone aged 18+ in all 50 US states.
However, due to substantial state-level opposition to this trading style, Polymarket’s availability is currently more limited, and event contracts can only be traded now via a downloadable mobile app. In short, if you can see Polymarket on the banners of this page, then you are reading this from a state where you can sign up.
Individual State Considerations
So, I’ve established that Polymarket is available in 39 US states, with the following 11 states either blocked, or severely restricted.
- Arizona
- Illinois
- Massachusetts
- Maryland
- Michigan
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Tennessee
Looking deeper, there are also state-level rules in place. For example, Polymarket is legal in California, but you can’t register for an account if your job involves anything connected with politics, or other state-related matters. This is due to concerns about insider trading raised by California’s state Governor, Gavin Newsom.
That said, in other states where Polymarket is available, in Texas for example, there are no restrictions in place beyond strict geo-fencing protocols, which prevent Texan residents from trading event contracts if they set foot outside of state lines.

Let’s Talk About Event Contracts
Every event contract works in exactly the same way, irrespective of the subject or underlying asset involved. In the simplest terms, every event contract has two sides, each showing a different percentage, but always totalling 100%.
To simplify things even further, there’s usually a question involved, which can only be answered in one of two ways: Yes, or No. An example would be ‘Will the new Scary Movie be a box office hit’? In this scenario, Yes stands at 82%, No at 18%.
The percentages represent the probability of the event happening based on the opinion of all Polymarket users who have purchased a contract. In my example, a Yes contract would cost $0.82, and a No contract would cost $0.18. When the event ends, if your prediction is correct, you receive $1.00 per contract.
Event Contracts Are Dynamic
Although my example will have helped you to understand the basics, there is a little more to it than that. Certainly things you need to understand before you jump into any 5 minute crypto markets, or other short-term event contracts.
Prediction markets are all about peer-to-peer trading. The platform, Polymarket in this case, just facilitates offering them on its app, and applies a small fee for doing so. When you engage with an event contract, you are trading with other Polymarket users.
Also, when you buy a contract, the price isn’t ‘fixed’. As more traders buy or sell contracts, the probabilities, and consequently the prices, change. The level of change can vary hugely depending on the type of event, but you need to take into account that the value of your contracts can just as easily go down, as up.
Crypto Event Contracts
When it comes to cryptocurrencies, they are a volatile asset. I’m sure everyone has seen some pretty incredible changes affecting the price of Bitcoin during the last decade, for example. Although major events are rare, it’s still a fact that all cryptos have their moments, which is especially noticeable over a short period of time.
Polymarket routinely offers event contracts for six cryptocurrencies. Beyond the 5 minute markets I’m looking at in this article, you’ll also find 15 minute markets at Polymarket, plus regular daily, weekly and monthly event contracts for the following crypto assets:
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Solana (SOL)
- Ripple (XRP)
- Dogecoin (DOGE)
- Binance Coin (BNB)
Polymarket’s 5 Minute Crypto Markets
I’m sure you’re starting to see that condensing price changes into a five-minute window of opportunity is intense to say the least. Even if you have some experience, before you consider trading in this hectic market, I’d recommend watching a few events run from start to finish first.
It’s also worth exploring all of the features Polymarket provides for every event contract on its platform, and understanding their value during a quickfire event.
- Real-time graph - An interactive 5-minute candle graph, which you view as Up or Down. Hovering over any part of the graph shows the price at that time.
- Market movement - The last five contracts bought or sold.
- Fees applicable - The percentage fee payable for a winning contract.
- Rules - The official T&Cs for each event contract, including end time and resolution source.
- Market Context - Clicking here generates an AI overview of current trends which could affect the outcome.
- Resolution source - The official source Polymarket will use to determine the outcome of the event.
- User activity - This shows all of the contracts bought and sold during the event.
- Chat - Here you can chat with other users, or pick up useful pointers.

Summarizing Polymarket’s 5 Minute Markets
As I’ve shown you, 5 minute crypto markets are unique to Polymarket. There are six different cryptocurrencies available to trade in this format: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Ripple (XRP), Dogecoin and Binance Coin. These 5 minute crypto events are hugely popular with traders, and as such they are highly intense.
As cryptos are notoriously volatile, it can prove extremely challenging to make accurate predictions, so these quickfire events are not ideally suited to anyone new to prediction markets.
That said, Polymarket provides a huge amount of useful information and real-time features for every event. I’ve also mentioned that Polymarket’s availability varies between different states, but if you can see Polymarket on the page banners, that means you can sign up.
