Today, however, the state also draws attention for its top-quality online gambling options.

Online sports betting in Nevada is not a new concept. Indeed, players in the state have had access to in-person sports betting and casino games for many decades, and mobile casinos and sports betting have been an option for almost a decade.

Bettors are taking full advantage of the opportunity, and the user base is growing, with almost 50% of the state’s sports betting occurring online. As the state continues to expand its market regulations and accepts even more bettors, online sports betting will be a force to be reckoned with.

Here’s what you need to know about sports betting in Nevada.

Why Should I Join a Nevada Betting Site?

Betting in Nevada is a safe and fun experience. Here are some reasons why you should bet in Nevada:

  • Nevada has had sports betting legalized the longest in the country, with decades of experience in the sports betting world.
  • Nevada sportsbooks are safe, legal, and regulated by the Nevada Gaming Commission.

  • Users are often asked to convert their money to cryptocurrency to help overcome the illegal nature of offshore sports betting.
  • There are way fewer banking options for deposits and withdrawals.
  • You can’t trust that you’ll be paid.
  • There are fewer betting options available.
  • There are no online sports betting apps available, so it’s more inconvenient.

Nevada Sports Betting Sites

Nevada has been at the forefront of sports betting for decades. With that, the state has many online sports betting sites to choose from.

Each site offers different sports betting choices and options to players, so you should look over what each site offers before making your decision. Here are some of the sites at which you can place your bets online when in Nevada:

BetMGM

BetMGM is the online gambling home of one of the most popular gambling operators, MGM Resorts International. The brand has long been known for its gambling expertise in the US, with more than 30 years under its belt.

Its sports betting options are somewhat more recent, launching in 2018. However, they are impressively polished thanks to the operator’s large reach and experience in the industry. BetMGM spotsbook is often the provider of choice for local as well as international bettors.

William Hill

William Hill is a great sportsbook choice for many throughout Nevada. The company manages the most sportsbooks of any operator in the state, making it likely that a land-based location is nearby. The buildings might not be the biggest or flashiest, but the betting experience is second to none.

This includes quick deposits and wagers via kiosks at many of the physical locations to make the process as easy as possible. The dedication to ease and comfort is reflected in the app, which has an intuitive design that makes it simple to use.

WynnBET

Wynn Sports is different from most of the other entries in this list in that it is an independent sportsbook that is not connected to other large gambling operators. Instead, the firm relies on its own formidable resorts to provide land-based casinos and sportsbooks to meet user demands.

The Wynn has been in business since 2005 and has offered its customers top-quality service throughout that time. The only downside is that you might have quite the trek to visit a physical location.

Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars is an instantly recognizable name in Nevada, and for good reason. The operator runs the infamous Caesars Palace, which has been a mainstay of Las Vegas since 1966.

It also operates three sportsbooks outside of Vegas in Laughlin, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Users who place sports bets through the operator’s mobile app can collect comps to redeem at a variety of Caesars-affiliated properties. Caesars Sports users get a Play+ card that grants immediate access to winnings.

Bet Types Available

  • Moneyline: The moneyline is the most basic form of sports betting. It’s simply the bettor picking which team will win, balanced by the sportsbook’s odds that it will happen. The favorite will have a negative moneyline, while the underdog will have a positive moneyline.
  • Point Spread: The margin of victory involved in betting Against The Spread (ATS). The bettor is wagering on the point margin between two teams.
  • Totals: Also known as an Over/Under, Totals is betting on a game or prop total for more (Over) or fewer (Under) than a sportsbook-designated total.
  • Props: Bet on an item not directly involved with the score/result of a game. A prop could be a player’s total points scored, home runs hit, touchdowns scored, and it can be team totals like passing yards, three-pointers made, etc.
  • Live Betting: Live betting allows a sports bettor to place wagers on games as they happen. The sportsbook will change the odds as the game progresses depending on what’s happening in the game.
  • Futures: Betting on an event, statistic, or anything similar to occur after the end of a full event or season. An example of this would be betting on next year’s Super Bowl winner in the preseason.
  • Parlays: A single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. If any of the bets in the parlay lose, the entire parlay loses.

When Did NV Online Sports Betting Become Legal?

Nevada has a long and storied history with sports betting. The state first decriminalized ‘games of chance’ in 1865 and was the first to officially legalize gambling in 1931. Sportsbooks, specifically, were also legalized in 1931. However, they were not sanctioned by the state until 1949.

Thanks to this head start, Nevada has had the opportunity to refine its gambling industry into a well-run process that offers bettors a reliable and fair experience while still benefiting the state financially. This was not always the case, with sports betting heavily taxed at 10% for many years. It was not until the tax dropped to 0.25% in 1983 that the market bloomed, and sports betting fans were able to take advantage of the legalized activity.

In 1992, the state’s sports betting received a large boost in the form of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). Passed by the Supreme Court, the bill made sports betting illegal in every state save Nevada, which was ‘grandfathered in’ as its sports betting industry was already legalized and thriving. Bettors now had no choice but to flock to the state in person to place their wagers, and the market boomed in response.

  • 2013 - Nevada legalized online poker, allowing players to play poker online within the state.
  • May 14, 2018 - After a long and uphill battle, the Supreme Court rules in favor of New Jersey and declares the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) unlawful. This allowed all states to legalize sports betting.
