Vegas Golden Knights Round 1 Recap
The Vegas Golden Knights enjoyed a great regular season, posting 82 points in the West Division, arguably the toughest division in the NHL. They had a league-best +67 goal differential. Vegas was able to defeat the Minnesota Wild in seven games capped off by a resounding 6-2 win.
Vegas was led by winger Mark Stone. Stone scored four times in the series against Minnesota. Mattias Janmark delivered a big performance in Game 7 with a hat trick (six points in the series). The Golden Knights also saw Alex Tuch score three times, Chandler Stephenson added five helpers, and even Nick Holden tallied four assists in five games.
The Golden Knights were led in goal by Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury was mostly great when needed as Vegas advanced past Minnesota in seven games. He posted a 1.71 goals allowed average and .931 save percentage. He had four quality starts and will now face maybe his most stern test in years in Round 2.
Colorado Avalanche Round 1 Recap
The Colorado Avalanche had a good year of their own with 82 points. They finished the season with a league-leading 3.52 goals per game and a +64 goal differential, which was good enough for the top seed in the West Division. The Avalanche swept the St. Louis Blues in Round 1.
Colorado had the offense to spare in Round 1 from many places, including center Nathan MacKinnon (six goals, three assists) and left-wing Gabriel Landeskog (two goals, six assists). Right-winger Mikko Rantanen also scored seven points behind a goal and six assists. Even Joonas Donskoi contributed three goals in Round 1. Defensemen Cale Makar and Devon Toews were stellar on both sides of the ice. The young puck-moving defensemen anchor one of the best cores in hockey.
The Avalanche was backstopped by Philipp Grubauer and he did not disappoint in Round 1. Grubauer won four times and posted a 1.75 goals-against average with a .936 save percentage. He stopped 103 of 110 shots in the sweep of St. Louis.
Vegas Golden Knights vs Colorado Avalanche Matchup
The Golden Knights and Avalanche were the two most balanced teams in the NHL and face each other in Round 2. Both teams rank in the top-five in goals for, goals against, shots for, and shots against. Colorado was able to go 4-2-1 during the regular season against Vegas. That helped Colorado earn home-ice advantage in this series. Expect Colorado’s ability to move the puck with their mobile defensemen to be the difference in this series. I see this series going the distance, but a series Colorado ultimately wins because of their ability to survive offensive droughts and slightly better scoring depth.
