Trevor Rosenthal Signs With Athletics: Trevor Rosenthal signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.
Rosenthal spent last season with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres. Reportedly, the 30-year-old reliever was seeking a four-year contract but the market never materialized. Adding Rosenthal to the rotation gives Oakland a replacement after losing one of the best closers in baseball, Liam Hendriks, who signed with the White Sox in free agency.

Despite losing Hendriks, the Athletics did not simply give up. The A’s finished in first place in the AL West in the MLB’s shortened season and will look to replicate that success in a more normal year. The team is still full of talent, and adding Rosenthal to the mix should help to alleviate the loss of Hendriks to an AL rival.

Rosenthal was sidelined the entire 2018 season with an elbow injury and signed with the Washington Nationals that November. He was a disaster with Washington and the Detroit Tigers, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in 22 appearances before signing with the Kansas City Royals last year. The shortened season was a blessing for Rosenthal. He was able to bounce back from injuries, appearing in 23 games and posting a 1.90 ERA and 38 strikeouts. Surely, the Athletics are hoping that Rosenthal was able to turn the corner in 2020 and was not simply a flash in the pan due to a shortened season.

Adding Rosenthal gives Oakland a bonafide, veteran closer for this upcoming season. Even though Rosenthal gives the A’s a boost in a position of need, his inconsistencies in recent years should be noted when looking at betting futures. But, while Oakland does not have the star power of the New York Yankees or Chicago White Sox, their ability to get past the Houston Astros last season was impressive.
PointsBet has the Athletics listed as the favorite to win the AL West at +120. Oakland has the seventh-best odds to win the American League at +1000. The A’s are given +2000 odds to win the World Series, which is definitely a lofty goal.
Due to his health history and age, Rosenthal is likely to be a midrange fantasy baseball closer — assuming Oakland doesn’t instead give chunks or the full lot of save chances to Jake Diekman — for the 2021 season. Rosenthal will not be as sought after as his Oakland predecessor, Hendriks, or top-end closers like Josh Hader or Aroldis Chapman, but could wind up a value fantasy baseball draft pick in deeper games if he gets ignored.
