Houston Texans 2021 Schedule, Changes, and Outlook

The Texans limped to a 4-12 record and gave up 464 points in 2020. While that led to a much-needed change in the coaching staff, there doesn’t appear to have been anywhere near the amount of personnel turnover that would generate a significant season-over-season improvement.

Furthermore, Deshaun Watson may miss time this year because of league discipline. Even if he does play, he likely won’t be happy about it given his public desire to play elsewhere.

One could hardly blame Watson given the absolute beating he’s taken over the last three seasons while being brought down 155 times. The patchwork veteran additions of Justin Britt and Marcus Cannon don’t figure to improve matters much on the offensive line. Phillip Lindsay and Mark Ingram were solid veteran adds to the backfield alongside incumbent David Johnson, but it seems like Houston may simply now have three serviceable complementary backs behind a still-suspect offensive line.

The Texans’ defense was also largely ineffective last year, allowing the sixth-most points per game (29.0) and third-most yards per game (416.8). Despite the glaring need for reinforcements, Houston spent its first three draft picks on offensive players instead — another perplexing move by a franchise that’s made plenty of them in recent years.

Despite the Texans’ lowly record last season, their 2021 schedule is far from a cakewalk. Even the Jaguars may not give them much of a break in the division considering the high-impact additions of Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne in the draft under Urban Meyer‘s new regime. The Colts and Titans project to once again be playoff squads, while drawing the NFC West for interconference play is essentially a nightmare scenario for a team with as many holes as Houston.

Texans 2021 Make Playoffs Bet: Yes Or No For Houston?

NO (-650)

This is a steep price to pay on any wager, but it appears to be the right path to take with respect to the 2021 Texans, especially if Watson is handed any sort of league discipline. This is a relatively low-risk wager for someone with the bankroll to foot it, as there appear to be too many quality teams on Houston’s schedule for David Culley’s squad to get anywhere near a playoff berth.
