The Steelers entered the 2020 campaign with a sense of renewal and resurgence, as they were getting their franchise quarterback back after he’d lost almost the entire 2019 season due to injury. The idea of Ben Roethlisberger as a cure-all for the offense seemed sound when Pittsburgh jumped out to an 11-0 start, but the Steelers couldn’t maintain their early momentum and lost five of their last six, including their lone playoff game.
Roethlisberger returns for the 2021 season firmly entrenched as the starting signal caller after taking a pay cut this offseason. The receiving trio of Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, and JuJu Smith-Schuster are back as well, as is tight end Eric Ebron. With their pass catchers largely set, the Steelers used their first round draft pick on Alabama running back Najee Harris, whose outstanding speed is complemented by a pair of soft hands that could make him an even bigger dual threat than the player he’s replacing, James Conner.
On the defensive side of the ball, Pittsburgh opted to keep as many pieces in place as possible, with the notable exception of Bud Dupree. However, his loss is at least partly offset by the expected return to full health of Devin Bush Jr., the 10th overall pick in 2019 who got off to a strong start in 2020 before tearing his ACL in Week 6. He joins T.J. Watt, Vince Williams, and Alex Highsmith to form a fearsome foursome.
The schedule, on paper, undeniably looks like a grind for the Steelers. The away ledger could be especially difficult to navigate, but it’s worth noting that Pittsburgh was 5-3 on the road last season and is 65-50-1 (.565) overall when traveling during Mike Tomlin’s 14-season tenure as head coach, second only to the Patriots during that span. However, Pittsburgh did have a difficult time winning in the division outside of Heinz Field last season, with a 28-24 win over the Ravens in Week 8 serving as the only road triumph for them in the AFC North.
Despite their poor finish last year, the Steelers have a positive outlook heading into 2021. Pittsburgh has surrounded Roethlisberger with plenty of weapons as he enters his age-39 season, which should help him remain effective. The defense will be a strength as always, and the team remains exceptionally well-coached under Tomlin.
Steelers 2021 Win Total Bet Pick
Steelers To Win Over 8.5 Games in 2021-2022 NFL Season (-125)
The road slate could be brutal, but this is a veteran team with a vastly experienced coaching staff that will steal one or two wins as an underdog this season. Defense is also a great equalizer – as the Buccaneers aptly reminded us in the Super Bowl – and Pittsburgh’s D has the potential to be elite. With an extra game to work with as well, I can’t the Steelers finishing with a losing record.
