Raiders 2021 Schedule, Changes, and Outlook

In their first season in Sin City, the Las Vegas Raiders finished second in the AFC West with a record of 8-8, falling short of the postseason for the fourth year in a row. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier this year, however, as they play in a tough division and will face six teams outside their division that made the playoffs last year.

Quarterback Derek Carr remains one of the more reliable starters in the league, having missed just two games throughout his first seven seasons. He threw for a career-high 4,103 passing yards last year while tallying 27 touchdowns and a 67.3 completion percentage.

Carr’s most reliable target was Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller, who’s established himself as one of the best players at the position after back-to-back seasons with over 1,100 receiving yards. With Nelson Agholor departing in free agency, second-year receiver Henry Ruggs III will have to step up after a disappointing rookie campaign. Hunter Renfrow has been a solid option for Carr, while newly added veterans John Brown and Willie Snead IV should strengthen the receiving corps as well.

As for the running game, the backfield features Pro Bowl tailback Josh Jacobs, who’s surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first two seasons. He’ll be backed up by Kenyan Drake, a former featured back who should be able to keep Jacobs fresh. The Raiders surprisingly cut their three-time Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson this offseason, replacing him with Nick Martin, who had a 56.1 PFF grade last year as a starter for the Houston Texans.

On the other side of the ball, the Raiders’ defense had some major issues last year. Overall, Las Vegas ranked 25th defensively and allowed the third-most points per game (29.9). Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther did not survive the season, as he was fired following a 44-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in December. Gus Bradley, who spent the past four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers, will take over the Raiders’ defense and try to turn things around.

Raiders 2021 Make Playoffs Bet: Yes Or No For Las Vegas?

Raiders Make 2021 NFL Playoffs? No (-400)

The Raiders have one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, but their defense has been a nightmare for several years and still has too many holes. Bradley should help remedy some of those issues after overseeing solid defenses with the Chargers, but it’s not going to happen overnight. Factor in their formidable division and challenging schedule, and the Raiders seem likely to miss the postseason again.
