The 49ers traded up with the intention of replacing Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback. The team appears to be enamored with Mac Jones and the odds reflect that, with the former Alabama star coming in as a -200 favorite.
There is value on Justin Fields (+260) and Trey Lance (+400) because most draft pundits believe these two players to be superior prospects, including myself. Fields and Lance have the mobility that could potentially take Kyle Shanahan’s offense to the next level, so there’s definitely a chance that this happens.
Quarterback is the only option for the Niners here, so any other prospect is off the board. There’s no reason to lay a bet on Ja’Marr Chase or Kyle Pitts because that would simply be burning money.
2021 NFL Draft No. 3: San Francisco 49ers Draft Pick
Best Bet: Justin Fields (+250)
Fields is considered by many to be the second-best quarterback in this class, so if the Niners decided to take him at third overall, that could wind up being a steal. His dual-threat skillset is a great fit for Shanahan’s offense.
Sleeper Bet: Trey Lance (+400)
Lance also has dual-threat skills, so he would also be a great fit for the Niners. While he is more of a raw prospect, he has a high ceiling. Playing for the Niners would be good for his development because he could sit behind Garoppolo until he’s ready to take over.
