National League Cy Young (Bet365)
- Sixto Sanchez (+3300)
- Pablo Lopez (+5000)
Both Sixto Sanchez and Pablo Lopez are long shots to win the NL Cy Young award in 2021. Sanchez is a rising star and had a nice debut in 2020. In limited time – 39 innings – he induced ground balls at a 58 percent rate, limited home runs and finished with a 3.46 ERA. Advanced ERA metrics like FIP, xFIP and SIERA suggest he should have had closer to a 4 ERA. His K/9 rate was a paltry 7.62, and he never showed the ability to strike out many batters in his 5 years in the minors, despite possessing a 99MPH fastball and a nasty changeup. The low strikeout rate will severely limit his chances of winning a Cy Young, as will playing on a team that is likely to finish no higher than third in the division. Perhaps as he develops his repertoire in the coming years he will strike more batters out and improve his ERA, but until then, he is not worth putting money on to win the Cy Young.
Pablo Lopez has shown promise, but like Sanchez, does not have the strikeout stuff to legitimately compete for a Cy Young award. The key to his game is inducing ground balls, which he does at nearly a 50% rate for his career. Lopez will be an asset for the Marlins’ rotation but do not waste money betting on him to win the Cy Young this season.
