May 14 MLB Bet Tips
Chicago Cubs @ Detroit Tigers (7:10 p.m. ET)
- Cubs @ Tigers 5/14/21 Preview
- Probable Pitchers: RHP Jake Arrieta (CHC) vs. LHP Tarik Skubal (DET)
Cubs To Win First 5 Innings (-135)
Wager: 1.35 units (win would pay 1 unit)
The Cubs are usually hard to bet. They’re inconsistent and play in Chicago, the Windy City. But they’ll be playing in Detroit tonight while facing a struggling southpaw in Tarik Skubal, who’s 0-5 with a 5.67 ERA on the season.
Skubal has allowed 27 hits in 27 innings, including 18 runs and 10 home runs along with 16 walks. On top of that, he’s allowed 46 fly balls to just 18 ground balls, which has resulted in opponents blasting him for a .604 slugging percentage. It’s been a nightmare for Skubal this year, and the Cubs have the lineup to take advantage.
On the other hand, Jake Arrieta will take the mound for Chicago and has been much more reliable this year. Prior to getting shelled for seven runs in his last start, he’d compiled a 2.57 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP over his first five outings of the season. He’s in a prime spot to bounce back against the Tigers, who rank dead-last in the AL in runs scored.
Accordingly, Chicago should jump out to an early lead against Skubal while Arrieta keeps the home team at bay, making the Cubs an attractive play here.
Texas Rangers @ Houston Astros (8:10 p.m. ET)
- Probable Pitchers: LHP Wes Benjamin (TEX) vs. RHP Zack Greinke (HOU)
Houston Astros Over 4.5 Runs Scored (-140)
Wager: 1.40 units (win would pay 1 unit)
The Astros and Rangers let me down yesterday. I had the over 8.5 in the full game and there were six runs through three innings. The bats went cold after that, however, and Houston ultimately won 4-3 in 11 innings.
I’m willing to give the ‘Stros another chance today against Wes Benjamin, who is making his second career MLB start. He hasn’t shown much promise in his 11 appearances thus far with a 4.82 ERA, a 5.03 FIP, and a 1.46 WHIP.
Benjamin will likely continue to struggle against Houston, which features one of the best lineups in baseball. The Astros currently rank third among MLB teams in runs per game, first in batting average, and second in OPS, so they should do some damage here. They’ve been even better against lefties, posting a .774 OPS vs. LHP compared to .748 vs. RHP. They’ll also be at home, where their OPS is significantly better than it is on the road (.788 vs. .725).
Everything points to the Astros having a big night, which is why I’m backing them to score at least five runs in this one.
