The New York Jets pick Zach Wilson No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft on Thursday night.
Jets Pick Zach Wilson No. 2 Overall In 2021 NFL Draft
As expected, the Jets selected BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Wilson is a mobile quarterback with a strong arm and the ability to thrive in off-script plays, making him an ideal fit with new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur‘s scheme. LaFleur is from the Shanahan coaching tree, so this is a great landing spot for Wilson.
While some view Wilson as a boom-or-bust prospect due to his gun-slinging nature and inconsistent play, this is a passer with a high upside. Wilson can look like Aaron Rodgers with the way that he’s able to fire passes downfield while on the run. Other times, he can look like Johnny Manziel.
New head coach Robert Saleh kickstarts his Jets tenure with a fresh slate and franchise quarterback. Hopefully the Jets can put Wilson in a position to succeed after failing to surround former third overall pick Sam Darnold with a competent supporting cast.
Zach Wilson 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
It’s hard to trust Wilson in season-long leagues this year, but the good news is that he’s joining an improved skills group. The team signed Corey Davis, who joins Denzel Mims and Jamison Crowder to form a solid trio of wide receivers. While the o-line still needs improvement, it’s headed in the right direction led by 2020 first-round offensive tackle Mekhi Becton.
Wilson will play in a quarterback-friendly scheme with an improving supporting cast, but it’s hard to view him as anything more than a streaming option in one-quarterback formats and a QB3 in superflex leagues.
Zach Wilson Dynasty Fantasy Football Outlook
Wilson has a wide range of outcomes as a quarterback prospect, but it’s great to see that he’ll be coached by Mike LaFleur in a Shanahan-style scheme. Coaching is huge for a quarterback’s development, so Wilson has a chance to thrive in this offensive system.
Having said that, Wilson looks like the fifth-best quarterback among this class in terms of dynasty value. Trevor Lawrence is clearly the superior prospect. Mac Jones will likely land in San Francisco, surrounded by a star-studded supporting cast. Justin Fields and Trey Lance both have more rushing upside with the chance to also land in better offenses.

New York Jets 2021 Bet Tips With Zach Wilson
All New York Jets 2021 NFL Futures bets are provided by BetMGM and current as of Thursday, April 29, at 11 a.m. ET. (New BetMGM customers get a Risk-Free Bet of up to $600 by clicking here or using the code THEGAMEDAY.)
New York Jets 2021 Win Total Bet
- Over 6 Wins (-110)
- Under 6 Wins (-110)
The Jets have improved on offense, defense, and coaching, but even with Wilson, this looks like a team that has a 7-win ceiling, making the Under the prudent play here.
New York Jets 2021 Bet To Make The Playoffs
- Yes (+450)
- No (-625)
The Jets would likely need Wilson to hit his ceiling as a rookie to make the playoffs, so it’s not worth it to bet “yes," even with his nice value.
New York Jets 2021 Bet To Win AFC East Division Title
Jets To Win AFC East (+2000)
The Jets are still in rebuilding mode with a lot of holes on their roster, so even if Wilson had a Justin Herbert-like rookie season, it’s unlikely that it would result in a division title. Pass on this bet.
New York Jets 2021 Bet To Win Super Bowl 56
New York Jets To Win Super Bowl 56 (+8000)
The Jets are much closer to picking in the Top-5 again than winning the Super Bowl, so you shouldn’t even consider this bet.
Zach Wilson 2021 Prop Bet(s)
Zach Wilson to Win Offensive Rookie of the Year (+550)
Wilson is ranked third in odds among rookies, behind Lawrence and Fields. While there’s some value in this bet, I don’t think his supporting cast is good enough to help him win this award, so I’d pass on this bet.
