As expected, the Jets selected BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Wilson is a mobile quarterback with a strong arm and the ability to thrive in off-script plays, making him an ideal fit with new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur‘s scheme. LaFleur is from the Shanahan coaching tree, so this is a great landing spot for Wilson.
While some view Wilson as a boom-or-bust prospect due to his gun-slinging nature and inconsistent play, this is a passer with a high upside. Wilson can look like Aaron Rodgers with the way that he’s able to fire passes downfield while on the run. Other times, he can look like Johnny Manziel.
New head coach Robert Saleh kickstarts his Jets tenure with a fresh slate and franchise quarterback. Hopefully the Jets can put Wilson in a position to succeed after failing to surround former third overall pick Sam Darnold with a competent supporting cast.

It’s hard to trust Wilson in season-long leagues this year, but the good news is that he’s joining an improved skills group. The team signed Corey Davis, who joins Denzel Mims and Jamison Crowder to form a solid trio of wide receivers. While the o-line still needs improvement, it’s headed in the right direction led by 2020 first-round offensive tackle Mekhi Becton.
Wilson will play in a quarterback-friendly scheme with an improving supporting cast, but it’s hard to view him as anything more than a streaming option in one-quarterback formats and a QB3 in superflex leagues.
Zach Wilson Dynasty Fantasy Football Outlook
Wilson has a wide range of outcomes as a quarterback prospect, but it’s great to see that he’ll be coached by Mike LaFleur in a Shanahan-style scheme. Coaching is huge for a quarterback’s development, so Wilson has a chance to thrive in this offensive system.
Having said that, Wilson looks like the fifth-best quarterback among this class in terms of dynasty value. Trevor Lawrence is clearly the superior prospect. Mac Jones will likely land in San Francisco, surrounded by a star-studded supporting cast. Justin Fields and Trey Lance both have more rushing upside with the chance to also land in better offenses.
