Football Team RB Antonio Gibson injured his toe in last week’s win over the Steelers. He exited the game in the first half and did not return. As a result, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said that the rookie rusher was unlikely to play in Week 14 against the 49ers. While Washington managed to pull out the win over the Steelers sans Gibson, his loss is still substantial.

Look for Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic to split the workload if Gibson is indeed ruled out. Barber is expected to manage the early-down and short-yardage work while McKissic will remain the team’s primary receiver out of the backfield and third-down back.
Last week versus Pittsburgh, McKissic went for 78 total yards on 15 touches (10 receptions) while Barber rushed 14 times for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Football Team WR Terry McLaurin is coming off one of his worst outings of the year despite beating the Steelers last week. He only caught 2-of-6 targets for 14 yards in the victory. It was McLaurin’s fewest targets, receptions, and yards since Week 5.
While the 49ers’ defense is still one of the best units in the NFL, they have kinks in the armor.
They are surrendering the 16th most receptions (158), the 18th most yards (1,943), and the fourth-most touchdowns (15) to enemy receivers this season. The 49ers are a middle-of-the-pack unit in defending the pass, which bodes well for McLaurin.
With Antonio Gibson unlikely to play, someone will have to step up on offense. If McLaurin can have a big game, the Football Team should come out of this one victorious.
With the 49ers giving up the fourth-most touchdowns (15) to wideouts this season, McLaurin has an excellent opportunity to end his four-game scoring drought.
San Francisco wideout Brandon Aiyuk stepped up with a 5-95-1 day on 9 targets in his Week 13 return to the lineup. The rookie hould complement Deebo Samuel as the main receiving targets to hold down the injury-riddled offense.
49ers RB Raheem Mostert has played in two games since returning from his ankle injury in Week 12. While he totaled 45 yards and a touchdown on 18 touches in Week 12’s win over the Rams, his usage regressed in last week’s loss to Buffalo. Against the Bills, Mostert totaled 44 yards on 10 touches.
Perhaps instead of employing Mostert as the featured rusher, the 49ers will go back to a two-headed monster, hot hand approach with Jeff Wilson. Sure, the 49ers always utilized a multitude of backs, but when healthy, Mostert was usually the guy. Now, it seems like Wilson is getting just about as much work as Mostert.
In Week 12, Wilson went for 40 yards on 12 touches while going for 59 total yards on nine touches in Week 13. Mostert had 28 touches in that two-game period versus Wilson’s 21.
Both backs must be effective on Sunday against Washington, whose defense is allowing the 10th fewest rushing yards per game (107.1) in 2020. If the Football Team can shut down the 49ers’ ground attack, Nick Mullens will have a hard time getting going facing a Washington defense surrendering the third-fewest passing yards per game (203.8).
