Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has fielded one of the NFL’s elite teams during his four-year tenure since 2017. In fact, the Chiefs have won the AFC West in each of the past five seasons, four of which, under Veach’s command. Following a Super Bowl loss to the Buccaneers in which Tampa Bay’s defense, primarily, their front seven, made Patrick Mahomes’ left a living hell for four quarters of forgettable football, Veach went to work. He opened the offseason by blowing up the team’s offensive line. While those moves left the public scratching their heads, Veach had a plan.
In free agency, the Cheifs replenished their front five. Notably, signing Thuney, the top guard on the market. While they also brought in Long and Blythe, Kansas City also drafted Humphrey, who will compete with Blythe for the Week 1 starting job at center.
We also must not forget the fact the Chiefs will also get OG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif back. Duvernay-Tardif opted out last season to fight COVID-19 on the front lines. He will be welcomed back with open arms by Mahomes, I’m certain. The Orlando Brown trade was a surprise, but also a necessity.
All of a sudden, Kansas City’s offensive line looks outstanding — on paper anyway.
The Chiefs did not heavily address the wide receiver position. They lost Watkins but re-signed Demarcus Robinson. They also have Mecole Hardman under contract and, per reports, are extremely high on Byron Pringle. And although they are highly unlikely to re-sign Bell, they did bring in McKinnon to play a similar role.
Defensively, the additions of Reed and Bolton will pay dividends early, but they must sign another cornerback, especially if Breeland is not retained.

For a perennial winner, the Chiefs have a pretty favorable schedule. They play in the NFC West, a division that did not field a team that won over eight games outside the Chiefs. While the Broncos and Chargers are expected to improve, the Chiefs should easily mater the division.
The Chiefs do have some tough teams on the new 17-game slate. They will face off against six teams that won 10+ games and seven playoff teams in total, including the Football Team, who qualified for postseason play despite only winning seven games. They will also get the Cowboys. If healthy, the Cowboys are primed to win 10+ games while fielding a dominant offense.
The Chiefs have averaged 12.7 wins over the course of the past three seasons. They may not win 14 games again in 2021, but the Chiefs should come close en route to a seventh consecutive playoff berth.
