April 6 MLB Prop Bet Picks
Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles
To Record A Win (-130)
Wager: 1 unit (win would pay 1.77 units)
Cole pitched well but missed out on a decision on Opening Day, yet he recorded decisions in 10 of 12 regular-season turns in 2020. He was excellent at Yankee Stadium as well, posting a 4-1 mark, 2.09 ERA, .197 BAA and 46:9 K:BB across 38.2 innings, and he went 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA and .141 BAA over 19.2 innings versus the Orioles specifically.
Opposing pitcher Dean Kremer was impressive as a rookie last season and allowed just two earned runs over 11 innings across two starts to the Yankees, with one of those on the road. That helps explain the relatively modest odds by Cole standards on this wager, but I like the ace’s chances with Yankees bats starting to break out and Baltimore sporting a 27.8 percent strikeout rate and .280 wOBA over its first 115 plate appearances against right-handed pitching in 2021.
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers at Oakland Athletics
Under 6.5 strikeouts (+100)
Wager: 1 unit (win would pay 2.00 units)
Kershaw faces an Athletics team that’s increasingly desperate for a win and that’s opened the season with a minuscule 6.9 percent strikeout rate and impressive .385 wOBA over its first 29 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this season.
Examining a larger sample from 2020, Oakland posted a middle-of-the-pack 22.0 percent strikeout rate versus southpaws at home, and Kershaw, who managed just two punchouts in his first start of the season versus the Rockies, actually failed to hit at least seven strikeouts in seven of 10 regular-season starts – including five times on the road — as well as in three of five postseason turns. Kershaw does have a solid track record against current A’s bats, but he’s only recorded 10 strikeouts in 44 total encounters with those players. Kershaw averaged 6.4 strikeouts per road start last season, and I’m in the camp if him falling at least narrowly short of seven Tuesday.
