2021 National League Cy Young May Odds: Sleeper Bet Picks
Max Scherzer (+2000)
Max Scherzer looks like he’s bouncing back from a disappointing shortened season, posting a 31.4 K-BB% (3rd) and 32.4% CSW (7th) in 46.1 innings (10th). The Washington Nationals are currently 13-18, so they’ll need to depend on their veteran ace to carry them into the playoffs. That’s definitely within the realm of possibilities, so Scherzer is worth a look at this price.
Walker Buehler (+2000)
Walker Buehler continues to exhibit phenomenal control, posting a 1.8% walk rate (T-2nd in MLB) along with a 27.6% strikeout rate (21st in MLB). While Buehler has had issues with allowing hard contact (4.00 xERA), he boasts a diverse repertoire of pitches that could take him to the next level if he can command his fastball a bit better and stay out of the wheelhouse. Playing for a contender like the Dodgers keeps Buehler in play for this bet.
Jack Flaherty (+3000)
Jack Flaherty is bouncing back from last year’s disappointing performance, putting up a 2.83 ERA and 19.8 K-BB% in 41.1 innings. The Cardinals have gotten off to a great start with a 22-14 record and Flaherty is the ace of this rotation, so if he can keep it up then he has a chance at the Cy Young. Let’s not forget how dominant he was down the stretch in 2019: 0.82 ERA in 44 innings in September.
2021 National League Cy Young May Odds: Best Bet Pick
Brandon Woodruff (+1800)
Brandon Woodruff is my favorite pick for 2021 NL Cy Young. He’s put up a 1.73 ERA (2.45 xERA), 25.5 K-BB%, and 31.4% CSW. Woodruff does a fantastic job at limiting hard contact, ranking in the 91st-percentile with a .253 expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA). Hitters have only barreled the ball on 3.2% of the time against Woodruff. He’ll need to carry this Brewers team because of their weak offense, so he’s a terrific value at +1800.
