Dynasty QB Fantasy Football Rankings: Breakdown

The quarterback position has never been deeper in fantasy football. At the top is Patrick Mahomes, who has averaged 40 total touchdowns per season in each of his first three years starting in the NFL. At just 25 years old and in Andy Reid’s offense, it’s hard to envision any quarterback taking him off the No. 1 spot.

After Mahomes, the next tier of quarterbacks includes young, athletic players with tremendous upside. Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Dak Prescott, and Kyler Murray can all beat defenses with their arms, but have the ability to rush for 500 yards and add a half-dozen touchdowns on the ground.

A player who belongs in this tier (if not higher) is Deshaun Watson. However, considering the legal problems he ran into this offseason, he should be obtainable below all of the players listed above.

The next tier of quarterbacks has a few older faces, including Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. Both players should deliver elite fantasy seasons over the next few years, but their advanced age makes them a little less desirable than the quarterbacks previously mentioned. Still, these two quarterbacks represent some of the best values in startup leagues as they are often picked after the top-eight or so passers.

Deciding how to value the first- and second-year quarterbacks will be challenging this offseason, as there are several talented passers with big question marks surrounding them. Will the Bengals be able to protect Joe Burrow? How quickly will Trey Lance see the field for the 49ers? Will he be able to make the giant leap from Division II to the NFL? Will Tua Tagovailoa keep the job in Miami, or will they search for a new quarterback? Of course, the same question can be asked for Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, as well.

If you are searching for value outside of the top-20 quarterbacks in our rankings, consider acquiring a proven veteran like Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr. While neither player has immense upside, they are steady players who provide a relatively high floor in good offenses. For teams that wait or “punt” on quarterback, both are fine late-round options in dynasty leagues.
