There is an honest debate to be had over what the more important addition this offseason has been between Trey Lance and this team’s general health. San Francisco was extremely unlucky in 2020 as they were without Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Jimmy Garoppolo, and their starting RBs for several games.
Samuel was lost to a foot fracture before the season started and did not practice with the team once between the Super Bowl and late September. He also suffered multiple hamstring strains which cut his season even shorter upon return.
Kittle only played 8 games due to his leg injury. Garoppolo only played 6 due to various issues. The starting RBs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman only played 8 games apiece.
On top of all this, games were lost due to COVID as well. 2020 was just not the 49ers’ season. They even lost games from crucial defenders like star EDGE Nick Bosa but on that end maintained the 6th-best DVOA which remains impressive. However, the loss of Richard Sherman may hurt them this season if a deal to return is not struck.
Luckily, the schedule is probably one of the easiest in the league. SF gets the Lions, Eagles, Colts (potentially sans Carson Wentz), Vikings, Bengals, Falcons, and Texans this season. A lot of winnable games there on top of the rest that should be competitive.

This may seem like a lot to ask with at least 11 wins, but given added game, it’s more reasonable to a degree. Lance will make the offense much more formidable than in past years with Garoppolo because at least he has an elite skill in his rushing ability. Garoppolo was just there to play at a league-average level in all facets and that is not a sustainable long-term model at QB.
The schedule is easy, the defense remains top-tier, the rushing offense could be even better, and the team is healthy. Smash the over.
