MLB Betting Props of the Day: Best Baseball Prop Picks Today
Zack Wheeler, SP, Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays (7:05 p.m. ET)
Under 7.5 Strikeouts (-105)
Wager: 1 unit
I’ve been high on Zack Wheeler all season, but his recent game logs suggest that he’s wearing down and pitching more to contact as a result of his heavy workload (MLB-high 168 2/3 innings). His strikeout prop of 7.5 is more reflective of the entire season and not his most recent eight starts in which he’s averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game — considerably below his season average of 7.8. He also has a 4.28 ERA and has allowed 8.2 H/9 during that span, both of which are well above his season averages of 2.77 and 7.0, respectively.
The Tampa Bay Rays have one of the best offenses in baseball this year, ranking second with 5.3 runs per game. They’re averaging a whopping 6.6 runs per game in August with a .264/.333/.485 batting line, and with 2.0 homers per game on the road compared to 1.1 at home. They’re middle of the pack in terms of strikeouts this month, so there’s not a ton of upside with this matchup.
Citizens Bank Park is more conducive to power than Tropicana Field, especially for left-handed bats against right-handed pitchers such as Wheeler. I can see the Rays taking a lot of pitches and hitting some home runs to force Wheeler out of the game earlier than expected, causing him to finish below this strikeout prop for the seventh time in nine starts.

Walker Buehler, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers @ San Diego Padres (10:10 p.m. ET)
Over 6.5 Strikeouts (+110)
Wager: 1 unit
When you look up consistency in the dictionary, there’s a picture of Walker Buehler. He’s been lights-out all season and should win the National League Cy Young. In addition to completing at least six innings in 24 of his 25 starts, he’s notched at least seven strikeouts 15 times. Seven of those occasions have come during his past eight starts, when he’s averaging 7.9 strikeouts per turn.
The San Diego Padres have hit the skids over the past two weeks, losing 10 of their last 12 and averaging only 3.3 runs per game during that stretch. Their strikeout rate is 21.1% in August, but it’s 23.6% at home and they’ve been struggling to hit for power there (.371 SLG). Buehler should be able to exploit San Diego’s reeling lineup at pitching-friendly Petco Park and finish with his usual seven or eight strikeouts, making this a terrific bet at plus odds.
