2021 AL Wild Card Game Red Sox vs Yankees Parlays Picks & Predictions | MLB Play of the Day

Last Updated: Oct 5, 2021

On Sunday, four potential teams could be playing in today’s AL Wild Card game. However, all the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox had to do was win, and they were in.

Of course, both teams made things interesting, winning in the 9th inning when the games were tied. All of the chaos that could’ve taken place didn’t, but getting a rivalry game between the Yankees and Red Sox is a very solid consolation prize.

Gerrit Cole will take the hill for the Yankees, while Nathan Eovaldi is expected to take the hill for the Red Sox. Of course, every pitcher in the playoffs has a short leash if they’re struggling.

Cole and Eovaldi haven’t had the best outings in their last games against each other, and that absolutely makes you wonder about what’s in-store today.

  • Red Sox 1st Half Result (+160)
  • Rafael Devers To Record An RBI (+160)

This parlay has +823 odds, which I think is a solid value for three same-game events that all have a pretty likely chance of happening. Let’s break down each leg below.

Boston Red Sox 1st Half Result (+160) at FanDuel

The Red Sox are going to be home, in front of their home crowd, in a rivalry game against the Yankees. The reality is, Gerrit Cole hasn’t pitched well in his last three games and has an xFIP nearing 5 in the last 30 days while also walking 8.8 percent in that same time span.

Cole has struggled against righties, allowing the last 62 righties to hit a wOBA of .433 along with an ISO of .309. The Red Sox should have six righties in the lineup, along with three lefties that have smashed right-handed pitching consistently all year, including Rafael Devers.

While the Yankees have more power, the Red Sox will have more base runners and chances to score in this game.

Rafael Devers to Record an RBI (+160) at FanDuel

Against Gerrit Cole, Devers is 4-for-19 with three home runs and an OPS of .934. However, in the last 30 days, Devers has smacked right-handed pitching with a .392 wOBA and ISO of .440. He’s also hitting 25.8 percent line drives and just 32.3 percent ground balls.

Right before Devers in the lineup will be Xander Bogaerts, who also has insane numbers against righties in the last 30 days with an ISO of .293 and wOBA of .434.

Bogaerts has walked 16.3 percent of the time against righties in that same time span and is going up against Cole, who has walked 8.8 percent of batters in the last 30 days.

With Bogaerts in front of Devers, there’s a good chance Devers comes to the plate with Boagaerts on base.

Nathan Eovaldi Under 6.5 Strikeouts (-186) at FanDuel

This is the postseason. No manager is going to keep their starters in the game unless they’re throwing a perfect game. Even in a 1-0 ballgame, with the Red Sox winning, Alex Cora will likely turn to the bullpen and get some fresh arms in the game.

The reality is, Eovaldi struggles the third time through an order more than the first and second time. I would have to believe Eovaldi exits the games without getting a chance at the full order the third time around.

Against the Yankees on September 24, Eovaldi threw 2 and 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs with two walks and no strikeouts. He couldn’t even record one strikeout!

His night will be much better than it was on September 24, but he’s not going to pitch long enough to reach seven strikeouts in this game.

AL Wild Card Same Game Parlay (+823) at FanDuel

At +823 odds, you should definitely take a chance on this MLB bet of the day.

The Red Sox have an entire fan base behind them and a lineup that should be more patient at the plate. I’m expecting the Red Sox to score early against Cole and believe Devers will be one of the guys in the Red Sox lineup that will produce.

Lastly, Eovaldi’s strikeouts are set way too high, and while the number is juiced, I have to take it.
