Madison Bumgarner‘s hit a major rough patch recently, going 0-3 with a 7.43 ERA, 7.30 FIP, and 1.70 WHIP over his last four starts, allowing at least four runs in each of those outings. He’s been getting pounded during that stretch with 26 hits allowed in 23 innings, including seven home runs.
The 32-year-old appears to be fading down the stretch, but his poor performance isn’t merely a recent trend. Since the beginning of 2020, Bumgarner has a 5.11 ERA and 5.25 FIP over 32 starts spanning 171 innings. With over 2,000 big-league innings on his left arm, his best days are seemingly behind him.
That makes this an incredibly tasty matchup for the Houston Astros, who have been the best-hitting team in baseball against southpaws this year with a 121 wRC+. They’ve also been crushing the ball lately, averaging 7.1 runs per game over their last 10. With a power-laden lineup that features premier right-handed hitters such as Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, and Yuli Gurriel, Houston appears poised to feast at home.
The Astros should explode against Bumgarner early and score at least three runs in the first five innings, making this one of the best MLB bets today.
