MLB Props of the Day: Best Baseball Props Today 9/17/21

Vince Velasquez, SP, San Diego Padres @ St. Louis Cardinals (8:15 p.m. ET)

Vince Velasquez was signed by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday after Blake Snell (groin) was placed on the injured list. Velasquez was released by the Philadelphia Phillies last Sunday and hasn’t pitched in over a month. He’s been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year with a 5.95 ERA, 5.59 FIP, and 1.48 WHIP.

Velasquez has also recorded fewer than five strikeouts in each of his last five starts, posting a 12.23 ERA and 2.21 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings over that span. Now he’ll go up against a hot St. Louis Cardinals team that has won seven of its last eight games and just blasted the New York Mets for 25 runs in a three-game sweep. I only lay a higher vig when the numbers are overwhelming, which they are in this case.

Logan Webb, SP, San Francisco Giants vs. Atlanta Braves (9:45 p.m. ET)

Logan Webb had notched at least six strikeouts in seven straight starts until his last outing, in which he struck out five against the Chicago Cubs. Much like the Velasquez play, I am leaning on a lower prop total with higher juice.

The reason I love Webb in this spot is his strong home/road splits. Webb’s been dominant at Oracle Park this year with a 1.66 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 10.4 K/9 rate while recording at least six strikeouts in six of his nine home starts.

The Atlanta Braves have been around a top-10 offense this month in most splits, so we are not picking on them in this spot. This is more of a play on Webb, who is one of our best MLB prop bets today given his home/road splits and incredible performance over the past four months (1.93 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 9.5 K/9 over his last 16 starts).
