Nick Pivetta has been the definition of an average starting pitcher this year with a 4.37 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and a 2.5 K/BB ratio in 19 starts. He’s come back to earth after a hot start, yielding a 5.22 ERA, an .831 opponent OPS, and 12 home runs over his last 11 outings.
Pivetta has struggled in his three starts against the Blue Jays this year with a 7.56 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP over 16 2/3 innings. In fact, Toronto just tagged him for 11 hits in his most recent appearance last Monday — the most hits he’s allowed in a start this season.
The Red Sox righty has also been a disaster at home this season with a 5.62 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, and 11 home runs allowed in 10 starts at Fenway Park. That doesn’t bode well for tonight’s matchup against the Jays, who rank top 3 in the American League in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and home runs.
On the other side, Thomas Hatch will make his first start of the season for the Blue Jays. Hatch pitched well after debuting for Toronto last year with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 17 appearances. Only one of those outings was a start, however, and he finished with mediocre peripherals such as a 7.9 K/9 rate, a 4.4 BB/9 rate, and a 4.14 FIP.
Hatch will have his hands full with the first-place Red Sox, who just took three out of four against the New York Yankees. Similar to Toronto, Boston features a dangerous lineup that ranks among the top of the AL in numerous offensive categories, including runs, hits, and OPS.
With first-pitch temperatures projected to be around 84 degrees, the ball will likely be flying tonight. All signs point to a high-scoring slugfest between two elite offenses, which is why we’re betting on at least 11 total runs.
