Gallen is coming off an impressive season where he posted a 2.75 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 28.2 K% in 72 innings. This is a 25-year old pitcher who has performed at a high level in each of his two half-seasons in the big leagues. Gallen boasts an impressive arsenal, including a four-seamer that averages 93 MPH along with a changeup and curveball as put-away pitches.
While we can’t expect as much volume as other NL aces like Jacob deGrom, Trevor Bauer, Max Scherzer and Aaron Nola, the price is too enticing to pass up. It’s in Gallen’s range of outcomes to put up a sub-2.50 ERA with a strong WHIP, which could put him in contention for the Cy Young. The D-Backs will need to be a surprising team for this to pan out, but I can’t pass up this value.
