This is a potential March Madness upset alert.
The Hoos are no strangers to losing in the first round as they lost to 13-seeded Ohio in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. In 2018, Virginia had the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament and became the first ever 1-seed to lose to a 16-seed when they fell to UMBC.
The Paladins are returning to the big dance for the first time since 1980 when they were a 10-seed and lost to a 7-seeded Tennessee team. Their only NCAA Tournament win came against South Carolina in 1974.

This is a horrible matchup for Virginia as Furman sports one of the best offenses in the nation, averaging 80.4 points per game.
They are led by senior guard Mike Bothwell who averages 18 points per game and most importantly shoots 83% from the free throw line. His experience and ability to ice the game late from the charity stripe give Furman the advantage.
Virginia plays at the fourth-slowest pace in the nation and will struggle to keep up offensively against this Furman team. Virginia only scored more than 80 points twice this season and it was during non-conference play at the beginning of the season.
If Virginia is to win this game, senior guard Armaan Franklin will have to have a big game similar to his performance against Baylor earlier in the year.

Under head coach Tony Bennett, Virginia’s identity has always been their defense, but when they faced elite offenses this season, they weren’t able to limit the scoring. Baylor scored 79 against the Hoos earlier in the season, and Miami scored 66 in conference play.
