Louisiana’s gambling reputation is nationally renowned, due mostly to the state’s litany of riverboat casinos, so it’s no surprise Pelican State residents in 55 of the state’s 64 parishes — the state’s name for counties — approved sports gambling in 2020.

Sports gambling officially became legal in Louisiana on October 1, 2021. Currently, there are nine retail sportsbooks in Louisiana where fans can legally place wagers on games and events in-person.

Online gambling, where fans can place legal wagers via sportsbook apps, is expected to begin in January. Each major online sportsbook is tripping over itself to put together a pre-launch promotion to attract fans to sign up before online gambling officially takes off.

Online sports betting is legal in LA, but online sportsbooks are not live yet. Online sports gambling is the second of a two-phase rollout by the state. The first was brick-and-mortar sportsbooks at the state’s various casinos, which launched in October.

The state made licenses available to its 20 traditional casinos, setting a January 1 deadline for them to apply, and stated that any sportsbook interested in having an online presence must also have a physical presence in the state.

Louisiana regulators also will allow restaurants and bars to offer sports gambling via online kiosks, which is regulated by the state’s lottery commission, though those have not been installed yet.

When is Online Sports Betting Launching in Louisiana?

The state said it expects to launch online sports betting in January to coincide with the NFL playoffs. Louisiana regulators need to thoroughly review applications and properly vet each gaming house before entitling it to a license and want to attract some traffic to the physical sportsbooks before opening the state to online gambling.

Online sports gambling expects to be a huge revenue stream for the Louisiana government. The state will collect a 10 percent tax on each bet made at an in-person venue and a 15 percent tax on wagers made online. According to The Advocate, gambling is the most lucrative industry in the state and trails only taxes as the largest revenue driver in Louisiana.

What Online Sportsbooks are Coming to LA?

All the major players are jockeying for position in the online gaming space in Louisiana. DraftKings, Unibet, Caesars, Penn National and Betfred already operate sportsbooks inside state casinos, and they are developing deals to attract new players when the online books launch.

WynnBet, BetMGM, FanDuel and Bet Rivers do not yet have physical locations planned — although Wynn reportedly will have kiosks inside one of the Caesars casinos in-state — but are all ramping up for the upcoming launch.

What are the Best Louisiana Sportsbook Prelaunch Offers?

BetMGM Online Sportsbook

  • Prelaunch offer: $200 in free bets
  • Projected New Player Offer: Up to $1000 risk-free bet
  • Full Review: BetMGM Sportsbook Review

BetMGM, which does not yet have a brick-and-mortar gaming operation in Louisiana, is offering new sign ups $200, in the form of four free $50 bets, with no deposit required effective December 8. The promotion runs until the state’s online sports wagering operation launches in January.

Betfred

  • Prelaunch offer: $150 in bonus bets
  • Projected New Player Offer: Up to $500 wagering match
  • Full Review: Betfred Sportsbook Review

Betfred operates the sportsbook at the Paragon Casino in Marksville and is offering $150 in free bonus bets to those who sign up ahead of the online launch with no deposit required. BetFred bonus bets play the same as cash, in that winning bets pay out the stake + profit. For example, if you were to wager all $150 on a bet with +200 odds, you would get a potential payout of $450 ($150 stake + $300 profit).

DraftKings

DraftKings, which runs a sportsbook at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles, is offering Louisiana residents a $100 bonus for those who sign up ahead of the expected January launch. No deposit required.

Caesars Sportsbook

  • Prelaunch offer: $100 free bet
  • Projected New Player Offer: up to $1001 first bet match
  • Full review: Caesars Sportsbook Review

Caesars, which operates two Louisiana sportsbooks including Harrah’s in New Orleans, is offering fans a $100 free bet upon sign up to use upon the launch of online gambling. Fans who deposit at least $50 will receive additional free bets after the launch.

FanDuel Online Sportsbook

  • Prelaunch offer: $100 in site credit
  • Projected New Player Offer: up to $1000 risk-free bet
  • Full review: Fanduel Sportsbook Review

FanDuel has two retail sportsbooks in Louisiana at Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, and Delta Downs in Vinton. FanDuel has plans to expand that number to five over the next year. FanDuel Online Sportsbook is offering a special bonus to those that signup in advance of their official launch. This offer includes $100 in site credit that plays the same as cash and just needs to be wagered 1x through to convert to cash.

How to Register at a Louisiana Online Sportsbook

In order to claim these prelaunch offers, you have to register a new account. Understandably there is some uncertainty from people who are registering for a service that isn’t operational yet. But signing up is easy and requires no initial deposit. Here are the steps.

  1. Choose the sportsbook offer you want from the list on the top of this page and click “Get Bonus”
  2. You will be taken to the registration page of the corresponding sportsbook
  3. Enter your personal information and register, using promo code GAMEDAY when applicable
  4. You are all set, and when the sportsbook launches in LA, you can use your prelaunch bonus and make your first deposit to claim their standard promotional offer.
