Senegal vs Netherlands World Cup Predictions

Last Updated: Dec 2, 2022

This is the marquee game from Group A, as these are the two nations that will be vying for the top spot in the group. Both teams are in the top 20 of the FIFA World Rankings and have lofty expectations to go far in the tournament.

Getting first place will be crucial in this group as a matchup against England in the knockout round will most likely be on the docket for the team that finishes second.

The Dutch return to the World Cup after missing out in 2018 and will feature a lot of unfamiliar faces to the football fans who only watch once every four years. The Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, and Robin van Persie era has come to a close, but this new era of Dutch football brings a lot of promise.

Senegal failed to qualify out of the group stage in 2018, losing out on a tiebreaker against Japan in the group standings. A penalty kick from Sadio Mané against his former teammate Mohamed Salah’s Egyptian side in World Cup qualifying is what booked the Senegalese ticket to this year’s tournament. Unfortunately, Mané will miss the World Cup due to injury.

Let’s dive in on the odds for this Group A matchup.

Senegal vs Netherlands Odds

  • 3-Way Handicap: Netherlands (-150) | Draw (+275) | Senegal (+450)
  • Draw No Bet: Netherlands (-400) | Senegal (+280)
  • Over/Under Goals: Over 2.5 (+105) | Under 2.5 (-135)
  • Both Teams to Score: Yes (+100) | No (-130)

Senegal vs Netherlands odds are current as of 11 a.m. ET on Sept. 23 at Caesars Sportsbook.

The Oranje are favored to win this match but it will be a close one. The Dutch have struggled on the defensive side of the ball but will have one of the better attacks in this tournament.

The oddsmakers don’t see this as a high-scoring game with the Under 2.5 total goals juiced to -135, while the Over does have some value in a game with two high-powered offenses.

Senegal vs Netherlands Prediction

Senegal 1:2 Netherlands

Senegal plays a very traditional 4-3-3 under manager Aliou Cissé and will push the wing backs up the field. When they are on the attack, their formation transforms to a 2-3-5 with their fullbacks overlapping the wingers, creating a dangerous attack.

With the Senegalese pushing forward, it will come down to the defensive play of their captain Kalidou Koulibaly to prevent the Dutch counterattack.

In their recent UEFA Nations League games, the Netherlands have employed a 3-4-1-2 lineup with Denzel Dumfries and Daley Blind playing more of a midfield role while pushing up instead of a defensive position. This is a tactical change from Louis van Gaal‘s previous formation of a 4-3-3 for the team.

They have had success in the Nations League so far, and it has shown on the defensive side of the ball, which has been one of their areas of weakness. The Dutch attack can compete against the best of the best but this is a nation that has always fallen short of expectations on the World stage.

Most nations will want to ease into the tournament, but these two sides will play their most important group stage to kick theirs off.

If goalkeeper Édouard Mendy is on his best game, then the Dutch might find it difficult to get the ball past him. He has not shown his best form with Chelsea lately, but he led his club to a Champions League title in 2021.

Senegal vs Netherlands Betting Tips

Memphis Depay has been fantastic at the international level but has lost favor with his club, as he is now a bench piece for Xavi at Barcelona. The Netherlands’ counterattack will give Senegal trouble, so this match could shape up to be a high-scoring affair.

Senegal will be looking to push the ball forward with pace at every chance they get and will open up the play for wingers on both teams to find space and capitalize. Both teams are talented but the edge is with the Dutch, and they will most likely secure the three points from this match.

Senegal vs Netherlands Best Bets

Over 2.5 Goals (+105) at Caesars Sportsbook

WAGER: 1 Unit

The two nations have dynamic attacks and play with an attacking mindset. The counterattack will be where they will look to press advantage and get on the scoresheet.

Both Teams to Score (+100) at Caesars Sportsbook

WAGER: 1 Unit

The Netherlands are the stronger team in this contest, but their weakness is on the back line. Virgil van Dijk will be relied upon to keep the defense disciplined but they are susceptible to an attack from the wings, which is where Senegal excels.

This game will feature goals from both teams as they will both be on the front foot to grab a stronghold on the group.
