North Carolina Sports Betting: Mobile Launching 3/11

We are getting much closer to having an answer to the question of ‘When will North Carolina sports betting launch?’

We have an answer! It was announced January 24, 2024 that March 11, 2024 will be the launch date for sports betting in North Carolina, per the North Carolina State Lottery Commission. Operators with licenses can have new users sign up to fund their accounts March 1, 2024.

The delay of retail sportsbooks launching was not totally unexpected given the nature of HB 347, which was recently amended to require each operator to partner with a pro team or sports venue (with a capacity of at least 17,000; 50,000 for pro golf tournaments).

The law originally called for up to 12 before they required operators to partner with teams or venues.

Most states had both online and retail launch at the same time, with Massachusetts as one that did retail first. However, North Carolina’s sports betting bill is a unicorn of sorts given the requirement that each sportsbook must be paired with a pro team or sports venue.

In that regard, the delay makes sense since the brick-and-mortar sportsbooks will be located in stadiums, arenas, golf course and race tracks - they’ll want to open their sportsbooks at the most opportune time, i.e. when their sport is in season.

The NC State Lottery Commission Meeting is scheduled for Jan. 10, so we might have a launch date by then.

Caesars Sportsbook North Carolina Has A Leg Up

Caesars Sportsbook didn’t need to apply for a mobile license because the law allowed it access already - instead it applied for a “supplier" license.

Caesars has a retail location in North Carolina with Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort through their partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (which are based out of NC), so expect the online sportsbook to become available in short order.
