Mac Jones to be Drafted No. 3 Overall (+150)

  • Justin Fields (-134)
  • Mac Jones (+150)
  • Trey Lance (+325)
  • Zach Wilson (+2500)
  • Kyle Pitts (+5000)
  • Ja’Marr Chase (+8000)

We can present the case that the 2021 NFL Draft does not begin until the No. 3 pick which is held by the San Francisco 49ers. With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson nearly locked and loaded to go as the first and second overall picks to the Jaguars and Jets respectively, the question of who is selected third comes to mind.

If this selection was still held by the Dolphins, things would get interesting as they do not have an immediate need at quarterback. However, since the 49ers traded a king’s ransom to move up to the No. 3 pick, it is safe to assume they are getting their signal-caller for the future. I mean, do we really think they dealt all those assets to get another piece for their defensive front? That is not happening. The 49ers are drafting a quarterback. It is a matter of whom.

To narrow it down, it will either be Justin Fields or Mac Jones. Just shy of two weeks away from the life-altering event for incoming prospects and the franchise-shifting event for clubs around the league, the 49ers have been heavily linked to both quarterbacks.

Recently, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggested that the 49ers will take an “open-minded approach" into draft day speaking in terms of the No. 3 pick. Moreover, while Jones was the apple of San Francisco’s eye since moving nine spots up into position to select a franchise-altering quarterback, latest rumors have Fields as their guy. In fact, Fields took part in a workout in front of 49ers brass as well as other teams earlier in the month.

On his Sunday morning Sportscenter spot, Fowler emphasized that if the 49ers don’t draft Fields, “it’s not because they don’t like him. It’s just because maybe they love somebody else."

That “somebody else" is Jones. Not only has 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan been captivated with Jones for the duration of the draft process, but even tenured NFL Insider Adam Schefter believes the Alabama alum will be the pick at third overall.

Aside from holes in Jones’ skillset, one of the biggest knocks on the quarterback is his Alabama pedigree.

  • Rarely played from a deficit
  • Didn’t play a lot of games
  • Had elite coaching
  • One of the nation’s best, if not the best offensive line
  • Supporting cast studded with NFL caliber talent

All of those aforementioned bullets are reasons why Jones could struggle at the next level. However, I am a believer if he lands with the right team. There are two quarterback-needy teams that I feel Jones could thrive with. The Patriots and 49ers.

Both the Patriots and 49ers have terrific offensive lines, a talented supporting cast, top 10 defenses (when healthy), and most importantly, the coaching. You won’t find much better than Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels and Kyle Shanahan.

To put things in perspective, if Jones was drafted by the Jets or Jaguars, his NFL career could plummet early. Those teams have a lot of holes and need high-ceiling quarterback talent to grow with. Meanwhile, if Jones landed with a win-now-ready club, there would be some growing pains, but he could find success early as he’d be entering a similar situation as he the one left, only now it is at the pro level.

Jones may not be the mobile weapon like a Fields or Trey Lance, but his elite preparation and ability to apply what he learns from coaches, meetings, and in the film room to the field is right up Shanahan’s alley. Shanahan also loves quarterbacks who can stand in the pocket, read the defense and execute the game plan while delivering the ball with accuracy.

If we remember, Shanahan had success with signal-callers that include Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, Jimmy Garoppolo and even Nick Mullens (to a lesser extent). Jones reminds me of those guys a lot more than a Fields or Lance.

While Fields has (-134) odds to be the third overall pick, this is a spot in which I am taking a risk. Although some draft experts, including Bucky Brooks, are calling Jones to the 49ers a smokescreen, I am on the other side of the equation. I believe Jones is what Shanahan is looking for to run his offense and run his team back to the Super Bowl. I will take Jones and his (+150) odds to go third overall.

Mac Jones to Be Drafted as the No. 3 Overall Pick (+150)

Mac Jones to be Drafted in the Top 10

  • Justin Fields (-400)
  • Mac Jones (-305)
  • Ja’Marr Chase (-125)
  • Kyle Pitts (-121)
  • Trey Lance (-110)
  • Penei Sewell (+110)
  • Rashawn Slater (+250)
  • Micah Parsons (+700)

If you want to take a safer bet with Mac Jones, SugarHouse offers this “Jones to be Drafted in the Top 10" option. You can choose any other player they have listed as well, but for the sake of this article, I am using Jones.

Jones (-305) has the second-best odds on the list to Justin Fields (-400).

If you take Jones in this prop, he doesn’t have to be selected as the third overall pick like the above wager. He just needs to be taken inside the top five. So should the 49ers pass on him, the Falcons could select him at fourth overall and you would cash. We could also see a team like the Broncos to Patriots trade up with the Falcons or Bengals to select Jones. You have more flexibility to win but lose out on the odds of taking him as the No. 3 pick.
