Kyle Trask NFL Outlook
Trask had a breakout season in his senior year, putting up 4,283 yards (9.8 Y/A), 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has ideal size for an NFL quarterback.
Trask is a decisive passer who is able to make quick reads when scanning the field. He performed well against strong competition in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Trask does a solid job at limiting turnovers.
Trask struggles with off-script plays, so it’s best for him to play in a scheme that caters to his needs, surrounded by talented pass-catchers and blockers. He has limited mobility, which can cause him to struggle with the pass rush.
Trask would benefit from a redshirt rookie season, where he can learn behind a veteran quarterback. He is likelier to develop into a solid starter than a franchise quarterback.
Kyle Trask NFL Comparison
Drew Lock: Trask has similar measurables to Drew Lock. Both quarterbacks have limitations with mobility.
Lock has the stronger arm, but Trask is able to go through his reads at a faster pace.
Trask and Lock each tend to struggle when plays go off-script, as they have challenges making throws on the run and evade pass rushers. Both quarterbacks have more than one year of starting experience along with one true breakout season.
Trask is an enticing prospect who is projected to be selected in the second round, just like Lock was back in 2019.
Kyle Trask 2021 Draft Team Fits
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers could select Trask as insurance for Sam Darnold.
If they miss out or pass on a top-tier quarterback at eighth overall, they may opt to go with Trask as a developmental prospect who can learn behind Darnold or push him for a starting job.
The Panthers would be a good fit because they have excellent supporting pieces like running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver D.J. Moore, who would help Trask’s development.
Denver Broncos
The Broncos appear to be in the market for a new quarterback once again, as Lock has been underwhelming as a starter.
Like Carolina, the Broncos have a strong supporting cast with young studs like tight end Noah Fant as well as wide receivers Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton and K.J. Hamler.
Trask would provide the Broncos with a similar skillset and measurables to Lock. This move could create an open competition at quarterback between Lock and Trask, since the latter would not be a first-round selection, so it wouldn’t necessarily push Lock out of town.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The 2021 season will almost certainly be Ben Roethlisberger‘s last year in the NFL. The Steelers have already signed Dwayne Haskins, but it would make sense to bring in another quarterback with elite size — similar to Haskins and Roethlisberger — to take two cracks at finding Big Ben’s successor.
Both quarterbacks would be able to learn behind a future Hall-of-Famer. This is a good landing spot for Trask because he would join a winning franchise with stability, playing with young stud wide receivers like Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool.
Kyle Trask NFL Draft Prediction
Round 2, Pick 36 (trade with Miami Dolphins): Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have the 55th overall pick, but that might be too late to select Trask, so they could move up in a trade with the Dolphins, a team that does not currently have a need at quarterback.
It’s difficult to find a successor to your franchise QB, so it makes sense for the Steelers to take two shots with Haskins and Trask. This would be great for Trask’s development because he can have a redshirt rookie season.
The Steelers have had terrible backup quarterbacks for too long. It’s time to ensure that they have the depth to survive a Roethlisberger injury during the season.
Kyle Trask NFL Draft Bets
The total for quarterbacks drafted in the first round is at 5.5 (+325) at BetMGM.
This would be a solid value because five quarterbacks are likely to go in the top 10. We have seen teams traded up for a late first-round quarterback in recent years, so perhaps a team that falls in love with Trask’s physical traits makes the move.
There is also Kellen Mond who has garnered some interest, so that gives you two potential options to push this total over the number.
I would monitor the situation to see if any sportsbooks come out with a prop on Trask’s projected pick total. If you can find the Pick at 45 or greater, it may be worth a look to bet on the Under. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Trask get selected in the early part of the second round, with a quarterback-needy team moving up in the draft to secure his services.
