The Miami Dolphins pick Hunter Long No. 81 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday night.
Dolphins Pick Hunter Long No. 81 Overall In 2021 NFL Draft
I had the Dolphins pegged to take Kyle Pitts if he was there at No. 6 overall. While they don’t have an immediate need for a tight end, employing Mike Gesicki, Adam Shaheen, and Durham Smythe, HC Brian Flores could want to utilize twin tight end sets more often, mimicking the success of the Patriots, amongst other teams around the league.
A Bostom College alum, Hunter Long is a big-bodied pass catcher who does need to improve as a blocker to emerge as a complete package. However, he is a surprisingly shifty route runner and can beat a mismatch down the seam for chunk plays with a knock to find the open space in coverage.
Despite his upside, Long will be hard-pressed to see the field with an underrated tight end depth chart ahead of him from the jump.
Hunter Long 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
Durham Smythe is projected as Miami’s TE1 with Mike Gesicki slated as the primary pass-catcher at the position. While lo0ng could see time in big sets, it won’t be enough to garner fantasy relevance in year one.
Hunter Long Dynasty Fantasy Football Outlook
You’re taking a shot in the dark in the latter portion of your rookie drafts if you select Long. Not only is the tight end position terribly difficult to pick up from college to the pros, but he has three capable tight ends ahead of him on the depth chart, one of which, one of the best pass-catchers at the position in the NFL when he is on.
I wouldn’t take Long any sooner than the fourth round in your rookie draft with tempered expectations.
