The Denver Broncos pick Javonte Williams No. 35 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday night.
Broncos Pick Javonte Williams No. 35 Overall In 2021 NFL Draft
The Denver Broncos are loaded with skill-position talent on the offensive side of the ball. However, if they do have a weakness, it is at running back. Following the departure of Phillip Lindsay in free agency, the Broncos were left with Melvin Gordon and the newly signed but unproven, Mike Boone.
Cue Javonte Williams.
The selection of Williams makes a lot of sense. Not only did they suffer the aforementioned loss of Lindsay, but Gordon recently turned 28 on April 14 and is entering his walk year. While Gordon should remain the primary back in Denver’s offense, Williams will get his fair share of touches.
Touted as a violent rusher with the skillset and elusiveness to make plays as a receiver, Williams not only was viewed by some teams as a first-round pick and the top back on their boards, but Williams is also considered a three-down back at the pro level.
Whether it is Drew Lock, Teddy Bridgewater or, the Broncos trade for Aaron Rodgers — longshot — there will be no excuses for whoever the QB1 is in Denver in 2021.
Javonte Williams 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
With Melvin Gordon still under contract, Javonte Williams may not be the top rusher on the depth chart from the get-go. However, considering Gordon’s age and injury history, there is a scenario in which Williams is featured back in Denver sooner rather than later, which bodes well for his fantasy football stock.
Barring a MelGo trade or release, I would not spend high draft capital on Williams in his rookie campaign. However, I would target him in Round 8 or later. It may appear high for some, but Williams brings an RB1 ceiling on any given Sunday.
Javonte Williams Dynasty Fantasy Football Outlook
In upcoming rookie drafts, I will admit that I like Najee Harris and Travis Etienne more than Javonte Williams. However, they have a clearer path to the top of their team’s running back depth charts over Williams, who may be a year away from the featured spot.
If running back is not a dire need and you have the assets intact to make a luxury pick, Williams is your guy. You will get production in Year 1 and he will flash. However, in his second season — considering Melvin Gordon is a free agent next offseason — Williams will be in line to pop as the league’s next big thing at running back.
Williams is a three-down back in the making at the pro level.
