The San Diego Padres were arguably one of the most improved teams between 2019 and 2020, and have continued to improve heading into the 2021 season. Since 2008, the Padres have only had two winning seasons, in 2011 and 2020, when they finished second in the National League West. For most of their time as a franchise, they have been bottom-dwellers in their division, but this season should be very different.
San Diego’s front office has constructed a talented team, bucking the 2020 offseason trend of avoiding high-priced players. They should compete with their division rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers, for not only the division crown but perhaps the best record in baseball.
During the offseason, the Padres allowed several players to walk in free agency. First baseman/designated hitter Mitch Moreland signed on with the Oakland Athletics. Since the designated hitter position will not be used in the National League this season, Moreland became expendable. Other players who hit free agency were relievers Trevor Rosenthal and Kirby Yates as well as starting pitcher Garrett Richards.
The Athletics also poached Rosenthal from the Padres, and he will most likely serve as their main closer. Rosenthal had a resurgent season after a disappointing 2019. Yates had a productive tenure with the Padres, serving as the team’s primary closer in 2019, recording 41 saves with a 1.19 ERA that year. He only pitched 4 1/3 innings in 2020 because of bone chips in his throwing elbow. Toronto scooped him up during the offseason, and he should serve as the main closer for the Jays this season. The perpetually injured Richards pitched well in 2020 and earned a contract with the Boston Red Sox, where he will see time in the rotation.
Despite losing several pitchers, both in the rotation and the bullpen, the Padres have more than made up for them with signings, trades and call-ups. San Diego boasts one of the best all-around pitching staffs in baseball.
The Padres’ 2021 rotation will include Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove, all of whom were acquired via trade in the offseason. Dinelson Lamet and Chris Paddack help make this perhaps the best rotation in the game.
San Diego’s front office, in constructing this rotation, was able to acquire pitchers without sacrificing top-level minor league talent. That will not only make the Padres competitive this season but for seasons to come. Darvish will be a steady presence in the rotation and is coming off an exceptional 2020 season. Musgrove had a career year in 2020 and should continue to improve this year. Snell may finally have the reins taken off after leaving Tampa, a team that leveled strict innings limits on him.
San Diego also has an incredibly deep bullpen. Mark Melancon and Keone Kela signed deals in the offseason. Both Melancon and Kela have previous experience as closers, most recently with the Braves and Rangers respectively. The Padres also have Emilio Pagan and Drew Pomeranz, who both have experience as closers. Other talented members of their deep bullpen include Matt Strahm and veterans Craig Stammen and Javy Guerra. Adrian Morejon and Ryan Weathers may also spend time in the bullpen as pitchers who could both start and relieve.
The offense is deep as well. Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. make up the left side of the infield. Tatis is one of the best young players in the game and just inked a deal that proves it. Jake Cronenworth, Ha-Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar should compete for time at second base. Trent Grisham has shown great discipline for a young hitter and has an excellent power/speed combo. Veterans Eric Hosmer, Wil Myers and Tommy Pham round out a talented and deep offense in “Slam Diego.”
Aside from major league talent, the Padres have four prospects in MLB’s top 100, according to MLB.com, despite making several trades during the offseason. Catcher Luis Campusano is one of their prospects who could make an impact this year, especially if Austin Nola has to miss significant time due to a fractured finger. If any starting pitchers suffer injuries, Mackenzie Gore should get the call. MLB.com lists him as the No. 6 prospect in baseball. Gore is known for his command, has four solid pitches, and should be called up this year.
