Patriots vs Jets Predictions Week 2 – NFL Pick of the Day

Last Updated: Sep 17, 2021

A new day has dawned for both the Jets and Patriots, as they began the 2021 regular season with rookie quarterbacks at the helm. For the Jets, No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson made his first start in Week 1, as did Patriots first-rounder Mac Jones.

Wilson was solid, going 20-for-37 for 258 yards, while throwing for two touchdowns and one interception in the Jets’ 19-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers. But beyond Wilson and the defense, the Jets didn’t look great in this game, despite making things close down the stretch.

Jones was pretty impressive in his debut as well, going 29-for-39, with 281 yards through the air and one touchdown in the Patriots’ 17-16 loss to the Dolphins. Jones also drove his team down the field late in the game, getting them in scoring position with time winding down. But his running back Damien Harris coughed the ball up in the red zone, which sealed New England’s fate.

If Jones and Wilson are truly destined to stick around for their respective teams in the long term, this could be the first of many contests we will be seeing between this tandem of first-year quarterbacks.

Although each team has only played one game thus far, New England looked like a more complete team, compared to the rebuilding Jets. Week 1 also gave us a hint of how the season should play out for both squads, which is why The Game Day is here to provide picks, predictions, and analysis for the Jets-Patriots Week 2 AFC East rivalry matchup in the NFL pick of the day series.

Best Bet: Patriots Moneyline (-265) at DraftKings

Patriots vs Jets Prediction

After Robert Saleh’s Jets lost in his head coaching debut, they will now face the greatest of all-time in Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on Sunday. The Jets’ offense struggled mightily against the Panthers, as did their offensive line.

To make matters worse, left tackle Mehki Becton suffered a dislocated knee and MCL sprain, which will require arthroscopic surgery and a brief stint on IR. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Becton is expected to miss the next 4-5 weeks, which isn’t great news since he is the blindside protector of Wilson.

Although the Jets’ defense kept them in it in Week 1, their former quarterback, Sam Darnold, missed two touchdown passes, and New York still looked like a team that has a long way to go in many facets of the game.

As for the Patriots, they put up a decent fight against the Dolphins, but ultimately came up short, losing by a point due to a costly fumble by Damien Harris in the red zone with 3:30 left. However, Harris still rushed for 100 yards versus the Dolphins defense.

On the other side, New England’s defense put pressure on Tua Tagovailoa, who threw an ill-advised interception in the fourth quarter, which gave the Patriots and Mac Jones new life.

Jones was even better than the box score suggests in his first NFL start, making a number of big throws down the field against an impressive Miami defense. He also converted a number of third down attempts against the Dolphins, which isn’t great news for the Jets.

When it comes to making predictions, it is safe to expect a close game, but New England will likely come out on top in their first meeting in a new era.

Prediction: New England Patriots 24, New York Jets 16

New England Patriots vs New York Jets Best Bets

Best Bet: Patriots Moneyline (-265) at DraftKings

I really like the value of this moneyline bet for the Patriots in Week 2 vs the Jets. New England may have lost its first game against the Dolphins, but the Patriots looked better than the Jets and I fully expect them to get their first win against their AFC East rival in Week 2. On an additional note, Belichick’s teams haven’t gotten off to too many 0-2 starts in his tenure, and this trend will stay the same in 2021.

The Jets’ offense couldn’t get much going until the game was winding down against the Panthers and the Patriots should put together a good defensive game plan that brings a ton of pressure in order to exploit the Jets’ weak offensive line. I expect the Patriots to pull out a victory in this matchup, making this -265 moneyline bet at DraftKings good value based on our NFL gameday odds.

Best Bet: Under 42.5 (-105) at BetMGM

These two defenses both showed they were more than capable in the first week of action. However, their offenses didn’t light up the scoreboard. And the Jets’ offense looked like more of a work in progress.

The Jets’ offensive line gave up six sacks and had trouble picking up stunts. This didn’t help Wilson, who somehow was able to get things going on his own and led the team to 14 points in the second half.

As for the Patriots’ offense, Jones’ ability to throw down the field was impressive and he also got help from his running game, as Harris had a good day on the ground, despite a crucial fumble. Alas, the way to go would be to take the under at -105 in this contest.

Best Bet: Zach Wilson Over 1.5 Touchdown Passes (+135) at DraftKings

As previously mentioned, Zach Wilson showed promise in his first start in the NFL. Despite often being under heavy duress, Wilson tossed two touchdown passes, which helped make the game competitive down the stretch.

Wilson showed off stellar arm strength, and found his No. 1 wide receiver Corey Davis twice in the end zone. And this week, a good value bet would be to take Wilson tossing over 1.5 touchdown passes against the Patriots, as the Jets will rely on their passing game heavily.

Patriots vs Jets Same Game Parlay Picks

  • Patriots Moneyline (-265) at DraftKings
  • Under 42.5 (-115) at DraftKings
  • Zach Wilson over 1.5 touchdown passes (+135) at DraftKings

When looking at parlays in this game, there are a few obvious avenues to go. First off, the Patriots moneyline has great value at -265. They nearly pulled off a win over the Dolphins, and now have an easier opponent in the Jets this week. Look for Mac Jones to best his rookie counterpart in Zach Wilson, as New England will pick up its first win of the season.

However, don’t expect this game to exceed the over, as both offenses are still a work in progress. That is why I like the under 42.5 in this game. Lastly, Wilson threw two touchdowns against the Panthers with little-to-no help, which is why I believe he will toss over 1.5 scores in this game.
