Patrick Surtain NFL Outlook

Alabama is consistently known for its loaded secondary, making it difficult for young players to contribute early — but Patrick Surtain II did. Surtain played in all 15 games (12 starts) and posted 37 tackles, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and quarterback hurry. Surtain also notched his first of four career interceptions with the Crimson Tide.

Surtain managed to top his first season by posting career-highs in tackles (42), interceptions (2), fumbles forced (3) and fumble recoveries (1). It’s no surprise Surtain carried that success into his junior and final season. Quarterbacks started wising up and limited passes in Surtain’s direction, but he still registered a career-high nine pass breakups and an interception for a 25-yard touchdown.

With the DNA and genes of a former Pro Bowler (his father is… guess… Patrick Surtain), there’s no question that the younger Surtain will make an immediate impact in the NFL.

Patrick Surtain NFL Comparison

It would be too easy — and also wrong — to compare Surtain II to Patrick Surtain. The Alabama alum best resembles 3-time Pro Bowler Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha was a shutdown corner feared by quarterbacks league-wide. Not only is there a size comparison, but with 15 interceptions and 408 tackles, Surtain could very well have a similar career trajectory.

Patrick Surtain NFL Draft Team Fits

Dallas Cowboys

Considered one of the 2021 NFL Draft class’s top defensive backs, pairing Surtain up with his former teammate Trevon Diggs in Dallas makes sense. Chemistry, experience and talent are there to make Surtain and Diggs one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL. At 6-foot-1, Diggs is slightly smaller and can match up against the smaller receivers, typically a weakness for Surtain. With veteran defensive back Chidobe Awuzie lost to the Cincinnati Bengals via free agency, the Cowboys selecting Surtain at No. 10 overall is a no-brainer.

Carolina Panthers

Some of the best receivers in the NFL — Saints’ Michael Thomas, Buccaneers’ Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and Falcons’ Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley — are in the NFC South. The best way to a spot in the playoffs is to stop these guys. Surtain can’t stop them all, but he can fill a glaring need at cornerback opposite Donte Jackson.

Philadelphia Eagles

Surtain has a midrange first-round draft position and that’s where the Eagles currently sit with the 12th-overall selection. Should they choose to address the defensive side of the ball, Surtain could be the man. Despite the key addition of Darius Slay last year, Philadelphia needs help at the cornerback position. Surtain’s coverage and run defense skills, combined with his size and speed could go a long way to improving the Eagles’ secondary.
