Josh Allen 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook
Allen improved by leaps and bounds as a passer in his third NFL season last year, going from one of the worst in the NFL to one of the best seemingly overnight. Granted, the addition of Stefon Diggs certainly helped there, but Allen deserves credit for his transformation as well. After improving his footwork and learning to make smarter decisions in the pocket, his passing numbers rivaled those of Tom Brady and Russell Wilson last year.
Between his success through the air and on the ground, Allen was the second-most valuable player in fantasy football last year behind only Kyler Murray. Already one of the best rushing quarterbacks in the NFL, Allen is now arguably its best dual-threat quarterback. The question is, can he sustain last year’s improvements going forward?
For starters, it helps that the Buffalo Bills will return their entire starting offensive line from 2020, which is widely regarded as one of the league’s better units. Buffalo also brought in another talented veteran receiver for Allen to work with in Emmanuel Sanders, which will give him another weapon beyond Diggs.
Perhaps most importantly, however, Brian Daboll is still the team’s offensive coordinator. Under Daboll, the Bills had the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL last year. They were also quite pass-happy, especially given their lack of talent at running back, which encouraged Allen to often run the ball himself rather than hand it off — particularly in the red zone.
With Allen’s personnel and coaching essentially remaining the same from last year, he should be able to flourish once again as Buffalo’s most talented passer and rusher. He’s capable of surpassing 4,000 yards through the air, 500 yards on the ground, and finishing with 40-50 total touchdowns.
Josh Allen 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)
Allen enters 2021 as a clear top-3 quarterback option in fantasy, surpassed perhaps only by Patrick Mahomes. Allen’s running ability enhances his floor, and he’s a better passer than other dual-threat QBs such as Murray and Lamar Jackson. Finishing as the top scorer in fantasy football is within his range of outcomes, so it makes sense that he’s currently going as the second signal-caller off the board in preseason fantasy drafts after Mahomes.
