Christian McCaffrey 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Prior to last season, the Panthers backed up the Brinks truck for McCaffrey by making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history with a four-year, $64 million contract extension. Unfortunately, McCaffrey proceeded to miss most of the 2020 campaign with injuries, playing just three games due to ankle and shoulder ailments. He made the most of his limited action, however, scoring two touchdowns in all three games he played while averaging 124.7 yards from scrimmage.

While 2020 was essentially a lost year for McCaffrey, he’s expected to be fully healthy for 2021 and ready to resume his role as Carolina’s top offensive weapon. The Panthers’ offense will look a little different this year with Sam Darnold under center, so McCaffrey will have to get comfortable with the New York Jets’ former QB to maintain his role as the NFL’s top pass-catching back.

This will also be McCaffrey’s first full year under offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who struggled without his top asset last year. After learning the ropes in his first season as an NFL coordinator last season, Brady should have a better handle on the role as well as his offense this year, so hopefully he’ll be able to make full use of McCaffrey’s talents.

When projecting McCaffrey’s stat line next season, it’d be fair to expect him to eclipse both 1,000 rushing yards and receiving yards as he did in 2019, especially with an extra game on the schedule. With 45 total touchdowns in 51 career games (45 starts), it’s also reasonable to expect around a touchdown per game for the 25-year-old.

Christian McCaffrey 2021 Fantasy Football Draft Value (PPR)

After being the first overall pick in many fantasy drafts last year, McCaffrey is once again expected to be the first name off the board in many fantasy drafts this year as well. If he stays healthy, he’ll likely finish as the top non-quarterback in fantasy, especially in PPR leagues where his massive receiving totals are even more valuable. If you get the chance to have McCaffrey on your fantasy squad, don’t hesitate to take him.
