Jaylen Waddle is the most explosive wide receiver in this year’s class. Teams are obsessed with trying to find a downfield threat like Tyreek Hill. We saw this last year with the Raiders surprisingly making Henry Ruggs the first wide receiver off the board. Will the same happen with Waddle?
While Ja’Marr Chase is widely considered to be the top wide receiver this year, it’s likely that Waddle has eclipsed teammate DeVonta Smith as the number two. Smith put up excellent college production, but he does not have the same type of explosiveness as Waddle. I expect NFL teams to prefer the latter due to his exceptional ability to take the top off an opposing defense.
The first four picks are almost certainly going to be quarterbacks, so let’s take a look at picks 5-12 to find a likely landing spot for Waddle. These teams include the Bengals (5th), Dolphins (6th), Lions (7th), Panthers (8th), Giants (11th) and Eagles (12th).
The Bengals have a clear need on the offensive line and can select tackles Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater. If they did end up going with a wide receiver, it would be Joe Burrow‘s former teammate in Chase, but this is a team that already has Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd.
The Dolphins need an alpha wide receiver to help Tua Tagovailoa take the next step as a quarterback. They can take Chase or generational tight end Kyle Pitts. Waddle is in play here, but he would be a surprise over Chase or Pitts.
The Lions are unlikely to take Pitts because they already have T.J. Hockenson, so we could see them go with Chase, Waddle, or whichever tackle or quarterback falls in their laps. It’s more likely that they take Chase over Waddle because they need an alpha wide receiver to replace Kenny Golladay.
The Panthers will probably pass on a quarterback after trading for Sam Darnold. While they could address the offensive line, I think it’s more likely that they target a pass-catcher. Pitts makes sense if he’s available here. If Pitts and Chase are gone, we could see Waddle as the choice to replace Curtis Samuel.
The Giants already signed Golladay to go along with Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard. I think they’ll try to address the offensive line with this pick. The Eagles need a wide receiver to pair with Jalen Reagor, but Waddle has a similar skill-set.
There are several options for Waddle within the Top 10. If you bet on the under here, you’re projecting that Waddle will go ahead of Smith. It seems likely that two wide receivers will be taken in the Top 10 and I think teams will become enamored with Waddle’s playmaking ability. I’d go with the under.
