In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, the United States will host another major international soccer tournament this summer.
Copa America 2024 will be played across 14 different venues in nine different states, with play beginning on Thursday, June 20, and ending on Sunday, July 14.
This tournament will be different from most of Copa America’s previous editions since it is larger and includes teams from both CONMEBOL and CONCACAF. Below, we’ll discuss how those changes affect the tournament’s format, bracket, and schedule.

Copa America 2024 Format
Copa America 2024 features 16 teams, who will compete for the trophy across two separate stages: the group stage and knockout rounds.
Here’s how each of those stages works:
Group Stage
The 16 teams are drawn into four groups of four. During the group stage, each team will play against the other three teams in its group.
The two teams with the most points in each group will qualify for the knockout rounds. If two teams in the same group have the same number of points, the first tiebreaker is goal differential. The second tiebreaker is goals scored.

If the two teams are still tied, the tiebreakers continue to the head-to-head matchup, the fewest red cards, and the fewest yellow cards. In the unlikely event the tie cannot be broken, CONMEBOL will conduct a random draw to pick a team to advance.
In all, eight teams will progress from the group stage to the knockout rounds.
Knockout Rounds
The knockout rounds begin at the quarterfinal stage and continue to the semifinals and final.
The quarterfinal matchups are pre-determined as follows:
- 1st in Group A vs 2nd in Group B
- 2nd in Group A vs 1st in Group B
- 1st in Group C vs 2nd in Group D
- 2nd in Group C vs 1st in Group D
From there, teams will move through the bracket until we reach the Final in Miami.
