Spread: Michigan -4.5 -105 ()
Over/Under: 55.5 (DraftKings)
Moneyline: Michigan -190 (Caesars), Washington +160 (DraftKings)
The two teams that have made it to the holy grail of college football games are programs that have been on the rise over the last few seasons. Both teams come in with a perfect record this season and dispatched of their semifinal opponents in tight games.
Michigan has made its living this season by crushing opponents’ souls through the ground game, with Blake Corum leading the way on the ground and Donovan Edwards coming in to spell him. They have not needed quarterback J.J. McCarthy to throw the ball as much to win, which has been nice since he fought an ankle injury for the last month or so of the regular season.
Washington, on the other hand, has been led by the steadying hand of probable first-round pick Michael Penix, Jr., who runs this explosive offense through three top-tier wide receivers led by Rome Odunze. The trio has combined for over 3,000 receiving yards and 26 passing touchdowns, beating up mostly everyone on their schedule this year.
As much as I love Washington and their whole mentality from the players all the way to the coach (Kalen DeBoer is a beast), I can’t help but think Michigan might be the best matchup both defensively AND offensively for the Huskies.
One of the biggest advantages that Texas was supposed to have against Washington was their ability to have their defensive front control the line of scrimmage and get pressure against Penix. That didn’t happen, but if you tuned into the Michigan vs Alabama game earlier in the day, Michigan’s defense sacked Jalen Milroe six times, getting into the backfield with ease.
That is what I’m worried might happen here, because Washington’s passing game is built on Penix having time to let downfield plays develop into explosivity. While Penix is great at this, will Mcihigan’s pressure overwhelm him?
My guess is that Penix does not get enough explosive plays off, and Michigan scores a late touchdown against the Huskies’ poor rushing defense to cover the spread in this game.
